Aeroplan has me over a barrel

I have aeroplan points but find that you need more aeroplan than airmiles. my parents complained about limited seat availability too with aeroplan, although my FIL books with his aeroplan all of the time and seems to have success..of course I don't hear any of his booking stories.

I have been using my airmiles points a lot for free merchandise. Just recently booked a flight to LA but had to cancel due to illness (bought cancellation insurance). i just had to pay the taxes, which I fully expected but it came to a total of $232 or so and the insurance was half that price. oh well, got my airmiles back. I have the West Jet gold card for airmiles. It does cost $60 annually but if I book early enough and can get seats on westjet a flight to LA can cost 800 airmiles instead of 1750!

I generally have a problem with paying annual fees but figure $60 is alright.

Anyone have any experience with buying travel/medical insurance through the credit card company? Mastercard is offering $60 a year for travel insurance. I have recently been diagnosed with a chronic disease (Crohn's) so there may be times I might have to cancel. If i book a trip for both myself and my hubby, will it cover both of us for $60? is it complicated going through M/C?
