I am from the good 'ol USA and I wonder the same thing. Even at the standard minimum wage, these girls cannot make ends meet here. And waiters are at their own special subminimum wage. How that got through years ago, I don't want to know (hint bribes errrrr I mean campaign contributions to the proper lawmakers) They depend on tips for a substantial portion of their income.
It's just customary here at standard or better hotels to tip the maids and porters. At the budget motels, tipping is alot more spotty. But I do it anyway.
