Advice on lost check

Stolen to me means one thing - she put it in her locker, and came back to her locker to find it missing. If it disappeared any other way, it's "lost" IMO even if some other kids picked it up & walked off with it. Theft from a secure location versus carelessly leaving something laying around unguarded.

That's what I mean. If it was stolen (and it could have been sitting on a chair and someone stole it as well) and I contacted the school and they didn't seem to care then I would be calling the police.

Agreed

I would not ground the kid for losing something, but I do like the ugly coat idea.

You need to go to the school yourself. It is not their job to find your kid's lost coat. Calling the police is ridiculous unless you know for sure it was stolen and who stole it. What are they going to do?

OK, this my final post here. I asked for advice on the check. I got it. Thanks!
I did not ask for advice on whether she should be grounded. She is 12. It is a lesson in responsibilty. She left it lying somewhere. ETA: And then lied about it for 2 days, saying she left it in her locker, but she knew it was gone. I only found out because she hadn't turned her lunch money in, which is the check in question, which was in the pocket of the coat.

ETA: there are 3 coats in the lost & found at the school. I was told this by my dd who checked, and by the receptionist who checked. We are not a large city by any means. That is why I haven't gone in. and there is no playground in middle school.
