I have a vacation booked for Aug 15-29th for Free Dining...the ONLY way I can afford a two week vacation. DS and I have been waiting and saving and we finally can...but now it seems that is not a good time to take vacation due to my job status.

I thought I would have a job for the fall (I am off summers) by now but I don't yet. So now if I don't secure some type of job in the next few weeks, then I will have to wait and try again for jobs that come out in mid to late August. Exactly when my trip is booked. No problem, I thought, I can apply while I am away but it seems interviews may be taking place the last week I am away  Obviously, I didn't think of that part...

So while I have a deposit on the trip, I haven't booked flights yet because I am unsure of my dates. Meanwhile they keep going up :scared:

Should I book my flights at twice the cost they were before to ensure they dont keep going up, and then if I don`t secure a job for fall, change my Free Dining trip to later in Sept when I can get cheaper flights?
How long does it take SW to give a credit if I change my dates of flying?

And if I don`t book SOMETHING soon at a reasonable price, the original trip might not happen for the cost of flights.

I am sooo stressed that I can finally do this trip and I may not be able to take it now because of the timing....

I know you all will understand and maybe offer me some direction...

Thanks

Why not shorten your trip and go for only the first week. Then if you have to do interviews on the last week you will be home. I don't think I would go on a trip in September if I was jobless. OTOH, if you have a brand new job, how are you going to get time off in September?.

As for flights, you might luck into a seat sale. But I doubt it. Summer is vacation time so prices only go up.

IMHO job = house and home. yes Disney puts smiles on us, but not if your stressing while there. Disney will be there next year. Do what is right for your family. Good Luck

OP as much as taking a trip would be fabulous as others have said house and home always come first especially as you mentioned you have a child. In my mind there is no debate to have in your situation. Your #1 priority is to secure a job, vacations are luxuries that are earned. Besides how much will you really relax if you're focused and concerned about finding employment. WDW isn't going anywhere, delay until you've got a stable income.

Thank you all for your replies! I should be more specific....I would still have a job, just not maybe the job I would like...I work for the school board. So if I don't secure a job for the year starting in the fall, I can still supply and keep pretty busy.
And until I get a permanent job, which at this rate could be forever from now lol - I will always be in this position if applying to jobs at the end if school
year\beginning of fall :(

Does that change anyone's response?

We could shorten it but DS would rather wait till we can stay for longer.
I would only go later in Sept if iI didn't end up starting a job in September. I can supply and work my own hours.

I will still have a job as a supply but there is no guarantee i will even get an interview. But if i went i would just know i would have to wait for the next round. But yes i would be stressing either way.

No, I don't think that would change my reply. Especially about going in Sept. If you are a supply teacher hoping to be hired full time, it can't look good if you are unavailable to work when they call you. Doesn't that kind of thing go into your record?

I am an Educational Assistant. I won't go against my record

If it is not going to affect seniority and you are still elgible for the next round in september i would definately take the trip. Our board hires for good positions right into October, often these later postings are better than the first round positions. Not many permanent positions available anyway from my experience. Go and enjoy your vacation and accept the first term position that becomes available when you return :)

As an education assistant aren't you expected to be available during the school year? I assume that means you're in the class room? Can you not go perhaps a bit earlier in August while schools are on vacation??

I would take the trip, but I'm one of those "you only live once and you could die tomorrow" kind of people. As for flights, we've always been able to book pretty cheap last minute flights (some just days before flying, and some a few weeks before) - but haven't tried in August. We've always gone January, June, September....

Have you looked into flying from alternate Southwest locations? I typically fly from Detroit but just discovered Flint, MI offers a direct flight for pretty cheap. And the prices stay cheap until quite close to the trip date.

I have friends in teaching and the whole hunt for a full time job is absolutely crazy. Most people I know stay on the supply list for 6-8 years.

We have been advised by our board that back to school for staff this year (mandatory) is Thursday Sept 3, Friday the 4th is a board Holiday. I know this new schedule has messed up a few Holidays of some of my friends.

The first day for students is Tuesday Sept 8, 2015.

While the following is not a requirement here is my take (21 years experience)
the last week of summer allows for classroom set up, meetings with collegues, program revisions, and team building,do we get paid--no, but it is not a time when I would want to be away. I usually spend two full unpaid days in Aug , doing set up activities.

Not only are interviews going on during the time you mentioned but Sign On at the board office with HR also needs to occur before employment starts . A Police check (criminal reference) needs to be done (No they do not use the one you get for field placements use in College or University).

Also --talk to a few permanent TA's in your board,I know Peel is negoiating right now and recently took a strike vote.

If teachers strike and the board lays us off--possible EI.
If you are casual--No work-no pay.

I know its a difficult decision but only you know your options and possible chances of being hired permanent.
Best wishes to you
Hugs Mel

Thanks for your info! Since I am a supply I was
aware that there is a PD day on the 3rd. I will work
this if I get a term position for the fall. If I am supply I won't have to.

However, if I get a term job as an EA and there is a strike, I was told that I will still have to report to work as my union will not be on strike. As a supply there would be no work if they strike.

Since I am already employed by the school board, Ihave already done my paperwork with HR and had my police check. So all that happens if iI get a term job is I get sent a letter advising me of my new position and I show up to work.

Well fingers crossed I secure a position before August!!!!!! Then I don't have to worry about any of this!!!

Hi
I am going to send you a private message
Mel

Just want to mention round trip from Regina Sat to Sat is 860 ish and wed to wed is around 500 so have you checked different days.

Although I am usually the type to say "go for it", I think if it were me I might be looking at the possibility of two weeks of fun resulting in a whole school year of regret and weigh this out based on that.
