Advice needed - Should I cancel our trip?

I booked a trip to WDW staying Concierge Level at the Yacht Club in August. DH can only come for the weekend. No big deal, I can handle WDW with a 5, 6 and 9 yr old myself. I've done it before and enjoyed it.

Then I decide, oh well, I have the room, why not invite 23 yr old babysitter to come for the time before my DH arrives. She's thrilled and excited.

Great! Then I find out I'm pregnant. Oh well, Babysitter can take kids on Splash Mountain and I can find a nice place to sit down. We're still going.

Then, yesterday, Babysitter tells me she just found out she's unexpectedly pregnant. Big shock to everyone.

She still want's to go to WDW.

Should we go or cancel? Can two pregnant women handle 3 kids in the August heat? One pregnant women being 15 years older than the other and, by the way, already looking very large compared to 23 year old 1st timer and I'm only 7 weeks.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

We (nonpregnant) are scheduled for an August vacation and I am seriously concerned how well we will handle the heat and humidity. We went early May and Late June last year and May was great. June i was shocked walking off the airplane how hot and humid it was. My 11DS left MK at lunchtime because he couldn't handle the heat. One day we didn't go to Universal until 7 pm. Another day we stayed at hotel entirely because the children didn't want to go to the parks.
Only going in August because that is DH's company scheduled vacation and we already have USF/IOA annual passes.
Didn't handle the heat well when I was pregnant so can't imagine Orlando in August while pregnant plus 3 kids to care for.
Sorry, can it be rescheduled?

I say go and have fun:) If you get tired or wore out go back to the hotel to rest, If the kids get bored the can swim or go to one of the kids club

This same thing happened to me my first attempt at WDW. I had no kids yet and it took me a long time to get pregnant the 1st time. we were scheduled to go in Aug. and I cancelled my trip. Then we had our 2nd trip planned to WDW and I got pregnant again!!!!! This time I still went because I was 20 weeks pregnant and not 10 weeks pregnant. At 20 weeks I felt great!!!!! At 10 weeks I didn't feel great. The heat and humidity would have put me over the edge!!!!!!!!

I say it all depends on you. What are you like during your pregnancies????

I had a wonderful time with my DH and DS, 20 weeks pregnant in November though. VERY different weather. Good luck. And if you decide not to go, it will be there when you are ready to go back. :)

I would reschedule for a time when my husband could be there for the whole week. Pregnancy aside, I wouldn't enjoy the trip without him.

I don't live that far from WDW, and the summer was the worst when I was pregnant with my daughter. I can handle the heat usually, but July and August were tough on me. I went to Sea World when I was almost 20 weeks, and I was exausted when I got home (and I was with adults who walked leisurely and avoided all rides with cautions for expectant mothers). Unlike the coast, where there is a breeze, in the center of the state the temps can soar and make you even more uncomfortable. Plus, the humidity is usually pretty high, which makes it feel warmer.

Personally, I would reschedule.

If you do go, take plenty of breaks, drink lots of water, and don't underestimate the heat. :sunny:

My last trip was also in August,<97>, I had a 2 year old, 1 year old and was 7 months pregnant. It was also an ANniversary year for something. Honestly, I'd never ever go 7 months pregnant in August again. Ever. Not even if it were free!

Congratulations on your pregnancy though! :-)

Our last trip to WDW was in June....it was spur of the moment.

Never again! I swore I would only go November-April. It is too warm even in May....I live in Atlanta and it is too hot already!

Can't answer the part about being pregnant.....I can tell you how low to set the AC if two cats sleep with you though!

August in Florida wasn't much worse than August in Massachusetts for us.

First, congratulations!

I think it would be best to reschedule or postpone because you can't ride many things while pregnant. Unless your kids can go by themselves, of course, but I'm not sure if that's what you'd do. Or at the least plan for the weekend when your dh joins you to have him take them on very active rides - if that makes sense - and the other days plan for other things that you and the babysitter can do, like swim or go to a character meal or something.

GL!

:sunny: I say go! Your husband will be there for a couple of days so the kids can ride, ride, ride the big stuff while he is there  . Shows, swimming, fireworks, and rides they can ride by themselves will totally fill your days!

I would consider bringing a non-pregnant babysitter. I'm sure you guys are close, but sometimes first-time pregnant momma's are a little over-the-top! (not always ;)) but still you have no idea how much fun she may be and what a waste for her and a pain for you  .

I'm not very good at cancelling plans. I get my hopes up and it's over from there! :teeth:

Good luck and congrats on your baby!

What's in the water in N.C.??? :) I went when I was 4 months pregnant in February, and it really wasn't that bad. It really depends on your kids. Would they be heartbroken not getting to ride some of the thrill rides, or would they be satisfied with the tamer rides?

Thank you for all the advice. I still can't decide what to do. However, I am leaning towards telling the Babysitter not to come or just cancelling the trip. However, I just hate wasting the plane tickets.

txgirl - I know what you mean about 1st time Moms. She's already talking about how tired she is. I don't have time to be tired. I work full time and have 3 kids. I just finished playing tennis today and she looks more tired than I do.

I'm pretty sure she won't be going with me even though she says she really wants to. I think it might be like having another child to worry about.

As far as the kids being okay with not riding the big rides, I think they willl be fine. I would just tell them to pick 1 or 2 of their favorites for DH to take them on.

I could just cancel the first part of the trip and only go for the couple of nights with my DH.

I could see about taking another babysitter or my Mom (maybe more of a liability than an asset). But, there's just not that many people I would want to share a room with.

I have to say that my kids really enjoy the evenings in the parks and the pool during the day. And I do think I'm staying at a wonderful resort (YC) to be able to handle it all. But, my fear is that I'll get down there and not feel well even though my previous pregnancies have been great.

I guess I don't have to decide now. The reservations are made, priority seatings set, plane tickets and park tickets purchased. I could just cancel later. I can cancel the hotel 5 days prior.

I'd be inclined to reschedule. My first and fourth are 9 years apart too and I'm telling you, it's pretty different the fourth time around. I like being pregnant, but I like it a lot more at 25 than at 34!! The heat would just be too much for me. I definitely wouldn't take the sitter, no way! I remember how my sister carried on with her first pregnancy ( I already had 4 kids at the time)...you'd have thought no one had ever had a baby before!

That said, if you can find another sitter to bring, and spend a lot of time at the resort, then maybe go ahead. It's hard to switch plans on the kids, especially when ANOTHER baby is on the way.

Congratulations on number 4, and get used to people asking, "Did you mean to get pregnant?"

Cheers,

NB

"Did you mean to get pregnant?" - I've heard that one. Someone even told my husband it was irresponsible.

Someone said to me, "You're taking this Catholic thing too far."

I just tell people that I don't really have much family; so if I wanted a family I would need to be the one to have it.

I can't see rescheduling the trip any time in the near future. I think WDW would be easier pregnant than with a baby or toddler. The youngest I've taken mine is 3 yrs old.

I know what you mean re: switching plans because another baby is on the way. I don't want them to blame the baby for not being able to go on vacation.

Hi Wendy  ,

I'm in G-boro also. I think you should go. You know how hot and humid it gets here and I think Orlando is just a tad bit more hot and humid. When it's too much just find some AC like you do at home. It will also take its toll on your kids, so they may be up for rest time. Drink lots and lots of water.

I agree with you as a mom of three that it would be easier to take them now.
I would definitely go to the parks EARLY. Are you staying concierge? This would be a plus. We're staying GF CL when I'm taking my 3 (11, 9, and 3)without my husband. Money well spent and added security. ;)

Good luck with your decision!

Lori

You sound like you are a strong woman. I think you should take them and leave the whiny babysitter at home. You can hire a sitter from Fairy Godmothers as needed. I am pretty sure you could even hire one to go into the parks with you for a day or two if needed. This is expensive, but probably not as expensive as bringing our own from home. I think you would really enjoy this time with your children. Good luck!

Your kids are old enough to stand in line together, and ride by themselves. You could wait for them nearby, if you start to get tired. Are they good at rolling with change? For instance, if you're tired and hot, and want to go back to the hotel, will they be easy with that? A lot depends on how independent and flexible they are. I think this is do-able. I wouldn't take the sitter.

yeah you guys can handel it. i am a mom of 4 and went to wdw when i was preg with my 4th and my kids ages at the time were 1 and a half 5 and 8. my hubby was no help with the one year old( mommys girl) so i still handeled it. ill tell you the heat really got to me and flying made me sick. iwas 5 mnths preg. by the way you will always look bigger than the first time mom because this is your 4th? your body is used to it. belive me my last to the minute the test was postive i was wearing materinity. ( i was NOT happy about that)

You know, I think I'm going to do it and without pregnant babysitter. I probably won't be going back for 3+ years so why not? The kids have been before and we don't have to see and do everything. I'm most excited about staying concierge level at the Yacht Club and the wonderful pool and I've never seen the Boardwalk area. I talked to DH and we agreed that if I go down, I would not worry about the money I may have to spend. If I get tired and don't feel well, I can hire a sitter or let them go to the Kids Club. And when DH comes down, he will spend time running them all over the place to ride their favorite rides.

My DD9 is a red head with very fair skin and I've always relied on her to tell me when it's time to go back to the resort. Even in October she was ready to go back to the pool by early lunch time. Usually, I'm the one that's disappointed we can't stay longer. So, I don't think they will be very upset about a more laid back approach. DD9 is also a night owl and so we may do much more in the evenings and just relax at the resort for much of the day. I know most people don't really like WDW in the summer; but, I enjoy that the parks are open later. Also, August in NC is no fun unless you're in the mountains. At least at WDW there are things to do in the AC and the bugs are not as bad (they must spray). My kids love Future World in Epcot so we might spend a lot of time there. Maybe I'll pull out my WDW Planning DVD and really study the Dave approach to WDW - scope out all the park benches, eat lots of ice cream and enjoy the pools. This time I might linger in the gift shops, enjoy the ducks at the MK and watch everyone else rush from ride to ride. Hum, this might just be a life changing event.
