I was fortunate enough to ride TSM a few times last Friday, and countless times on Sunday. I figure I should share some learnings...
During this soft-opening time (official opening is May 31):
- As of Sunday (this will likely change as the month progresses) "they" were still running to ToT and RnRC at rope drop
- FP machines exist, but they weren't functioning. My guess is that they won't start until May 31
- CMs won't tell you that the ride is open, and the map hasn't been updated
- The wait time was under 20 minutes at 2:00 (because no one knows it is in soft-openings, and it is in a remote section of the park)
Single-rider line:
- There is a single-rider line. It never had a wait when I was there.
- If you enter the single-rider line from outside, you will skip seeing Mr Potato Head. Another option is to go in the stand-by line, walk through the queue area where Mr. Potato Head is, and continue to the area where you get the 3-D glasses. The queue area opens up here, and you can enter the single-rider at this point (it will be obvious to you when you are there - ask the CM if you are confused) and still save a decent amount of wait time. I wouldn't do this if there is more than a 30-40 minute wait, but when there was a 20 minute wait time posted, it only took me about 5 minutes to get through to the area to watch Mr. Potato Head a little and get to where they have 3-D glasses (this was my longest wait).
Game scoring tips
(spoilers alert):
I only got to 200,000 points (highest score was around 290,000), so I'm sure others have better tips. I'll just share what I remember and figured out...
Highest value targets are worth 5,000 points. I think the target values are 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000
If you have been on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for Buccaneer Gold" at DisneyQuest you will immediately recognize the game shooting technology. It clearly is the same technology, except you are in a moving car, and the things that shoot out of your "cannon" change each screen.
Each screen has several "Easter eggs" which make new and higher value target appear if you hit them. I don't know all of them, for sure!
- First screen (just practice) is the only truly interactive part of the ride. If you try to throw pies at their faces they will start to protect their faces more. It is subtle but pretty cool. I know this because I talked with some of the imagineers that made the ride.
- Second screen (can't recall what you are throwing - I think they are eggs. It is a farm theme): In the upper corners there are several targets in a tree (I think) that are worth 1,000/2,000 points each. Also if you are doing well, then the barn will open up, and have more targets that are high value (I don't know what triggers this, but it happened several times).
- Third screen: You throw darts at balloons. In one of the upper corners there is a cloud with approx. 6 balloons. If you break all of the 6 balloons, then many many many balloons start falling and they are worth either 1,000 or 2,000 each (I don't know what triggers them to be worth 2,000 - but as I got better, they were more frequently worth 2,000).
- Fourth screen: Breaking dishes with baseballs. This is just too much fun!! Just shoot for the 1,000 point plates that are moving on the tracks below, and the 2,000 point plates flying at the top of the screen, hanging below the helicopters.
- Fifth screen: Ring toss game. I found this to be hard to do perfectly - especially hard to get the nearby targets. There are rockets that appear on the upper right and left that are worth 2,000 points each. If you get them, then some 5,000 point targets appear in the even farther upper left and right sections of the screens.
- Sixth screen: Shoot suction cup darts at targets. Each target you hit releases many more targets that have higher values. Just shoot fast. Can't think of any Easter eggs that I found here.
- Seventh "screen": Continuation of the fifth, but your vehicle is moving while you are shooting. Many 2,000 point targets appear, but they don't stay long
- Eighth screen: Mine trains with targets with points on them. Shoot fast, and make sure to hit the few targets that are above the mine trains. They start at 1,000, and go up to 5,000. If you are doing well all of the targets reach a 5,000 value by the end
-Ninth "screen" (last): You don't move, but a big target with a big number on it appears in front of you. You get the points shown every time you hit the number. This looks and behaves like the answer board on Family Feud (it flips each time you hit it). Huge advantage if you can shoot fast. If you go fast, the last few ones will be worth 5,000 each. This part KILLS your arm!!! It is hard and tiring "work"!
-Tenth screen: This part just shows you your score. If you pull the trigger here, confetti will come out of your gun. Very cute.
There is a fairly good video of the ride on
youtube, if you want more detail...

Hope that helps (and gets you excited for this great new attraction!!).
