I was just thinking about this the other day. When my mother packed our lunches back in the 60's and 70's we never had an ice pack, or anything to keep it cool or cold, and our sandwiches were made with meat. Now, when I pack my kids lunches, I always throw an ice pack in so the meat or whatever doesn't go bad (and to keep it cold). I guess my mom didn't worry about safety issues like people do now. My whole family made it out alive....

Thats funny, when I was younger you took your fabulous plastic Barbie and the Rockers....yes I totally dated myself to school. No ice packs at all.

No ice packs when I was a kid, but dh is nuts about putting them in our kids lunches.

I don't remember having ice packs back then. We did take milk in a thermos to keep it cold. Sandwiches were just wrapped and put in a metal lunch box with the thermos.

No, and by the time I was a senior in high school, I wasn't eating until 1 p.m. Everything was nice and warm by then, but I never got sick from the food. Of course, I did have deli meat sandwiches full of nitrates so that probably helped.

No, I don't ever remember having an ice pack put in my lunch box then either, it is a wonder we weren't ever sick :confused3 If I wanted milk, I purchased that in the cafeteria, otherwise juice was in the thermos or a warm juice box or capri sun.

I'm 21... and yep.

I had a blue and green M&M that mom rotated out, so they had plenty of time to freeze all the way through.
I stopped taking my lunch by 7th grade, though... so this was 99-ish and before?

Nope. No ice packs.

Didn't use a car seat.

Didn't wear a bike helmet.

Only started using seat belts when I had my first child.

It's a wonder I made it through childhood. ;)

Sorry, but that's funny. Uh…NO. Got some kind of lunch meat sandwich on wheat bread, and an apple. Bought a white milk for 5 cents.

Didn't get ice-filled water bottles when I did sports either ("the drinking fountain is over there…across that giant field…down the hill…through the parking lot…and to the left."). Oh, and my parents (and everyone else's parents) rarely attended our sporting events. They were fun and exercise for US, not entertainment or boastful events for our parents.

Walked or rode my bike everywhere, ESPECIALLY to my friend's house 3 blocks over ("Will you drive me to Suzy's?" "Are you NUTS? Walk!").

NEVER got driven to school. Not one time. Ever. Walked or rode the bus every day for 13 years. If I was late, I walked FAST.

Did all my own homework, all my own projects, posters, science fairs, etc. Never even occurred to me to ask my parents to help. It was MY homework.

My parents never once intervened at school when I got a bad grade, had a fight with a kid, etc. The bad grade was my fault. Period. The fight? Well, it happens.

Eating fast food was "a treat." Happened maybe twice a year.

Oh, and I got spanked. And sometimes had my mouth washed out with soap.

Sorry, but your post just made me realize that what some of us called "childhood" they now call "child abuse." It's an upside down world sometimes…:)

Nope - not once.

I ate sandwiches with mayo, too! ;)

I also ate "hot" food from a thermos that had been packed hours earlier and was nowhere near hot anymore.

As other posters have mentioned: no bike helmets, no seat belts, walked everywhere and a classic - bought cigarettes for my mother at the corner store I walked to! :scared1:

Ah... the 70's.:flower3:

Heck no. I always had either a tunafish (with mayo) or bologna sandwich for lunch and there was never an icepack. And I never got sick.

Nope.

However we started to pack our own lunches at 2nd and 3rd grade.

Nope, no ice pack. I didn't bring my lunch until high school. I loved bringing my sandwhich with cheese to school. After leaving it in my locker for a few hours, the cheese melted and I loved that! LOL!

I was a school in the 60's and my mum always froze our drink bottles over night so they acted as an ice brick in our lunch box. Perhaps she was ahead of her time:thumbsup2

I actually think it's pretty funny myself. And you are describing my childhood pretty well above! My mom used to MAKE us go out and play, just to get out of her hair. We were hardly ever in the house. In fact, she probably didn't know or care where we were, as long as we were home in time for dinner. Who says parents had it harder back then?? I don't think so. Mine very rarely went to my sporting events, either. The more I think about this, the more I realize how much things have drastically changed.
I don't remember eating any soap, but I bet my brother did. I did get spanked, and I had to walk home from school no matter what the weather was. Even teachers were allowed to spank back in the day. Can you imagine that now? And I never got sick from warm or hot sandwich meat. We didn't have any kind of juice boxes---it was Kool-Aid all the way (cheap), in the ole thermos. I had the metal lunch boxes. Oh, and for Halloween, we had to wear those cheesy, ugly, plastic masks that came in a box with a really cheap "outfit". Man, kids are truly spoiled now. I probably sound like my mother now---"when I was your age......".

Did we have the same mom? Well, my mom would often put peanut butter and jelly on the wheat bread. I grew up in an area that was hot too. By lunch time the peanut butter was warm. I don't remember if we got a cookie of something else with the lunch. All I remember is peanut butter and jelly on wheat and an apple. For years. I wasn't able to buy my lunch until high school.

Sure sounds like your mom was a real trail blazer!
