Adult Tonsillectomy Recovery

I think your son needs to decide if he would rather have less pain or feel loopy. If the doc said to call for refills if needed that's what I would do. I understand that he wants to "get off that stuff", but truly, pain meds are given for a reason and sometimes you need to take them despite the harsh side effects!

True. It's a choice between pain and loopiness. He decided to stick it out for a couple of days and see how it went. By Saturday (just a day after my post), he had definitely turned a corner. He was able to start eating solid foods, starting with pasta drenched in olive oil and butter to make it slippery. That went down nicely. Later, his GF brought him a milkshake and fries from McDonald's. He found that he if chewed the fries really well and chased them down with ice water, he was able to eat them. Then he tried sourdough bread (the soft middle part) dipped in olive oil. He started feeling a lot better when his stomach was somewhat full. By Sunday, he was able to swallow pills and ditch the liquid Tylenol and Motrin. He's still layering the two around the clock, and actually slept in his own bed last night. He had been sleeping downstairs on the couch and DH or I would stay down there to help him throughout the night. He didn't even nap or lie down yesterday. He played games on the computer and PlayStation. Things are definitely looking up!

So happy to hear that he is feeling better!!! That is a tough surgery!

I had mine out when I was 12 and I remember it being not only really painful, but it seemed to drag on endlessly. If I were you, I would talk to his doctor about it. If it were me though, me personally, I would stop the narcotics.

I had my tonsils out as an adult, and it was awful! Recently, I went through a very painful joint replacement in my index finger. My surgeon said that there have been studies that proved that taking 400 milligrams of Advil and 1,000 milligrams of Tylenol together are just as effective as prescription painkillers. I does work! I suggest that you get the refill of anti-nausea meds, though.
