My family of 5, myself, husband, 6 & 8 YO boys and 20 YO son, are planning a trip in September 2020. We will be staying 9 nights at POR but our 20 yo can only stay 4 nights. Can he still room with us? We will be on the dining plan. Would he be able to have the DDP and tickets for his portion of the trip or would we have to pay for him to be there the entire time even though he's only there for part of the trip? If we can do a partial stay for him in the same room, how would we book it? Would I need to call and add him or wait until check-in? If FD is offered, how would it affect that? Sorry for all the questions. TIA for any help you can give!!! :)

Everyone booked on the same package has to have all the same components. Same tickets, same dining, etc. You could add him at check in, but you wouldn't be able to get him a new magicband, prebook fastpasses, etc. You could also do a split stay. One reservation with him and a brand new separate one without him.

I think thats a great idea. Do a split stay (even if its at the same resort). One package with him, one without him. That way he'll also have free dining while he's here.

If you add him at check in you could still pre-book his fastpasses along with yours as long as he has a ticket linked in MDE. He won't be able to book or modify them himself at that time, but you could.

If you add him now, he has to have the same package components as everyone else in the room. You can add him at check-in so you don't have to pay for the same package components for him, however, you have to make sure to book a 5th sleeper room at POR or he will not be allowed to stay in your room as standard rooms there only sleep 4. As PP noted, you can purchase tickets separately for him, link them to his profile in your MDE and you will still be able to make FP+ for him at 60 days when you make yours even if he isn't on the reservation. Once you add him at check-in, you can then arrange Magical Express for him as well. Be prepared to pay an extra adult fee for the four nights he is staying with you. Booking a split stay with free dining is not cost effective as it would require you, DH and your two younger sons to purchase two sets of tickets to qualify for the promo for both stays. If free dining comes out and your reservation is under the promo, it would be more cost effective to book all 9 nights under free dining and just add him at check-in. Or, put him on the reservation, pay the cost of the length-of-stay tickets he may not fully use and then take advantage of free dining for him as well. You will end up with more credits, but it may save you money in the end. I would definitely do the math on that one if the promo is released.

Also keep in mind you will need to pay the additional person charge for the 4 nights he is staying in the room. This is applicable to anyone 18+ in the room after the first two adults.

Thank you!!

I would do the math VERY carefully on this suggestion.

Usually free dining requires the purchase of parkhoppers. So you'd be paying more for your park hoppers in order to get "free dining" for him.

Not sure how long your overall trip is, but if he's coming the first 4 days and you have another 4 days after that, you'd be paying for 2 4-day PH instead of 8-day PH.

Ok, so I just want to clarify. If we wait and add him at check-in are we only paying the extra adult fee for him? I can't be understanding that correctly. I mean, that'd be great, but that can't be right. As far as tickets, it sounds like my best bet would be to buy his tickets now and link them so I can do fastpasses. If we got FD, we'd just pay for his meals OOP, correct?

This is correct. You just have to make sure you book a 5th sleeper room, otherwise he won't be able to stay in your room. You only need to pay the extra adult fee for the nights he is there, You can buy his tickets and link them any time before your FP day.

Awesome!! Thank you!!

The only catch to adding him at check-in is with Magical Express - he must be on the reservation to take ME. If you are all arriving together, you would need to plan separate transportation. If he will be arriving later than you, he can take ME once you arrive and get him added to the reservation.

Enjoy your vacation!

The extra adult fee is applicable to anyone over the age of 18 after the first two adults. Since its just you, your husband, and two kids under 18, the extra adult fee would only be applicable to your son and only on the nights he is there if you add him at check-in. As PPs have clarified, you will need to make sure you have a 5th sleeper room so that he can be added at check-in. Room capacity has to allow it.
