Adult braces

How long have your braces been off if you dont mind my asking? Also I understand the concept of the retainer, but why dont teeth just stay where they are placed from the braces and perhaps a short (6 mos?) time with a retainer?

I have been out of braces for a little less than a year. You have to wear a retainer to keep your teeth as straight as they were the day your braces came off because your teeth want to move back to where they were before you had braces.

For example, my braces came off around the same time I found out I was pregnant with my youngest daughter. Since my retainer triggered my gag reflex, I didn't wear it as often as I should have, so my teeth became slightly crooked - not a lot, but still. After the morning sickness went away, I was able to wear them again, and my teeth became more straight. My front tooth overlapped the one next to it a bit prior to braces, and when I wasn't wearing my retainer it started to overlap again (just not as much as before).
