What do you think about them? "Futile effort at regaining lost youth and vanity" or "Good For You!"?? Feel free to make your comments

Nothing wrong with wanting to improve upon your looks and in some cases and it can probably improve your health.

I got my braces when I was 20 years old...It was one of the best things that I did for myself.:thumbsup2

I started a thread a few weeks ago asking if anyone had gotten braces later in life. I'm thinking seriously of doing this. I've always felt self-conscious about my smile. Now I want to do something about it. :teeth:

I say "good for you!" :thumbsup2

I got them after I turned 30.

I think 'futile effort at recapturing lost youth' or whatever that crap was couldn't be further from my reasoning.

More like 'needed to stop kids asking me if I was a vampire'

so I think :thumbsup2 and I also wonder why anyone would think otherwise.

I got them when I was 40 :) I had a retainer when I was a kid but it broke a long long time ago and my teeth had spread back apart. It is the best thing I ever did! I still wear my retainers every night (7 years later).

I say go for it!

I'm getting a second opinion to see if I can get them and I'm 37 years old. I was told by one ortho that I need SARPE along with braces. Don't want the surgery and can't afford it. I'm hoping another one will have a different opinion and other options.

I say go for it! I think I had braces (as a kid) for about 2 years, but, honestly, I would do it as an adult, too! I love that my teeth are straight and is sure to be a great boost of confidence! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I was about 35 when I got mine. I had always wanted them, and never had the money. I had a huge gap between my front teeth, and one tooth poked out when I closed my mouth. They have been off for 11 months, and I dont regret the time, pain or money at all!

The week I was getting mine off there was a woman getting hers on. She was in her 70's. Yes, 70's. She always wanted them, but her husband never thought she needed them. They were married over 50 years. He passed away, and she got braces! Most people at that age would say why bother, not her, she was going to live her final years with nice teeth.

I don't know if you meant it to be, but the original post was a little snarky. "Futile effort at regaining lost youth and vanity" seems a little judgemental to me. I just finished with my invisaligns a few months ago and I am thrilled. The dentist told me I needed braces when I was 13. My step-father told me I was too "f-in ugly" and that braces wouldn't help. He also told me I was too bleepin' fat, too bleepin' skinny, too bleepin' stupid, etc every day of my adolescense. Yes, I needed braces, my bite was off, I had an overbite and my self-esteem needed it more than anything. If someone had the gall to tell me I was being vain for wanting braces at 40 - well, holy crap, I think they'd end up on the floor.
People shouldn't be so flippin' quick to judge! :confused3

I had braces as a young kid (got them off at 14) but now at 24, I need them again. Even though I've worn my retainers religiously, my jaw apparently grew some more and I've got a bit of a gap that re-opened.

The ortho admitted he probably took them off too early but will not do anything about it. Needless to say, I'm going to a new ortho and luckily my insurance covers it.

Besides vanity, people get braces to improve their oral hygiene. It is an investment in your smile but also in your ability to process food and remove food from the teeth and gums. I think it is a worthy investment for many reasons, which is why I am starting the Invisalign treatment in July. I will be 31 years old and do not consider myself too old. I just think of it as taking care of myself.

Well, I have them and am coming up on my 1 month anniversary. Wouldnt have done it without the DW encouraging words. And it was a painful long road to get to even that point...

The first couple days sucked but within a week I was fairly used to them. The dentist is going to hopefully put the bottom set on on the 19th?

I have never thought of it as a way to recapture my youth (36 myself) because how can you recapture what you never possessed? I've had very crooked teeth my whole life but I am already feeling better about my appearance.

Now if they only had braces for spare tires around the mid section:lmao:

It was a little bit of a loaded question but I have had crooked teeth my entire life. And at 36 I now have braces. So trust me - I am seriously the LAST person on earth who would ever tease anyone about their teeth.

I don't see it as anything like "regaining lost youth." :confused3 One of my friends just got braces last week (in her early 20s) because she never had a chance as a teen. Another friend spent a good $$ fixing her teeth - several never grew in as adult teeth, so she got new ones and I think some other stuff done. She smiles so much more now than before - how is that a bad thing? I can't wait to see my other friend have a more confident smile.

I don't have a problem with people doing things, cosmetically, if it makes them more confident. I know I certainly dress better and have better posture since I was blessed by the Milk Fairy. ;) :rotfl:

Milk Fairy? As a man I must admit I am a little afraid to ask...

I had braces for 18 months when I was 30 (off by 31) because I was probably going to have to have gum surgery on my bottom front teeth due to severe crowding that was causing a receding gum line. That, and gum surgery, from what I understand, is quite painful.

Since it was a longer process than plastic surgery, I would hardly call getting braces as an adult a "futile effort at regaining lost youth and vanity." :rolleyes2 As long as you wear your retainer, your teeth will be nice and straight.:teeth:

Bottom line, if someone wants to get braces they should be able to do so without being thought of as being vain.

How long have your braces been off if you dont mind my asking? Also I understand the concept of the retainer, but why dont teeth just stay where they are placed from the braces and perhaps a short (6 mos?) time with a retainer?

I suppose a man might not understand.... :teeth: Let's just say there's a decent difference in my pre-pregnancy size and my post-pregnancy/breastfeeding size. ;)
