The first time one of those huge ads popped up at the top of my screen, it scared the bejeezies out of me. I've only recently noticed these huge ads.
I downloaded Free Adblocker Browser and use that as my primary one on my android. I did that when the DIS via mobile (I was using Chrome) was having so many issues a few years backMy ad blockers don't work on my mobile devices (tablet nor phone, both android). Adblockers work great on PCs.
I use Chrome on all devices.
I don't mind the regular print type ads, I don't like the video ones or ones that keep changing and reloading.
I use AdBlockPlus for Firefox and have never had an issue on this site or any other. I don't disable my adblocker for *any* site, especially not a site where the ads are very in your face and annoying. I use a PC.
My ad blocker is working. I don't see any

I couldn't stop the ads on my Android with Adblock Plus with Chrome. I did some reading on it and they claimed the adblocker had to be part of the browser to work. So I would have needed to change browsers and I just didn't want to do that for one site.
I know. I just didn't want to mess with it. And it's not an issue for me. I didn't change phones for it, that happened in a game of family phone shuffle. You can have more than one browser on your phone. I have Firefox and Chrome. I rarely use Chrome though.
On my phone on Firefox, I have AdGuard Adblocker. It was one of the suggested adblockers in the Firefox Add-on page. My phone looks like my PC (which has AdblockPlus,) and has no more ads.

Are you using it on an Android based phone? Just curious so I know whether to give it a shot or not because Chrome on my phone is filled with ads here.I switch to the Brave browser recently, which is like a more privacy-minded version of Chrome. I don't see the ads.
