ADR Uncertainty

We will be at WDW in mid-March and have been scheduling some ADRs. One problem that we have is uncertainty regarding our numbers. My brother and his wife may join us for the trip and would like to eat some meals with us. With them we are a party of 8, otherwise 6, which is too big to just show up without ADRs at many places.

So what should I do? If I make ADRs for a party of 8 and my brother cancels at the last minute, can I change the ADRs? Should I book for 6 and hope we can add 2 at the restaurants if he can make the trip?

Any advice is appreciated.

I am assuming that I cannot change an ADR from 8 to 6 people at some point in the future (or vice versa). Is this correct?

If anything, I'd make the larger ADR and then try to call to make it smaller later.

Always make the reservations for a larger party and then cut off the people that can't make it. For a party of eight, you will probably be either at two tables of four or one table for six (unlikely) and one table for two. It's easier to take away a table than it is to add a table.
