ADR newbie

We are heading to WDW in a couple of days, and I just tried to change our ADR at Sci Fi Diner on Saturday afternoon, but couldn't find any other times!!! The reservationist recommended calling closer to the day, to see if there are cancellations.

Questions to you --
When should I call?
Do people typically cancel (what are my chances)?

The SciFi Diner is the one "must do" on DH's list, so for now, I'm keeping the Saturday reservation even though it means leaving the AK early to get to DS.

Call any time you can - including the actual day you are supposed to eat there if nothing comes open before you leave.

It may not necessarily be someone cancelling their trip, it may be that someone is 45 days out and isn't able to pay their trip off, therefore kicking the reservation back into the system.
