Hi first time poster here! Will be visiting WDW this year in the last week of May and although will be my 9th time visiting I have never eaten at any of the sit down restaurants, we always just get snacks or eat back at the resort.
I keep reading lots about sci-fi diner and mama melrose etc and wondered, 1 are they worth a visit, and 2 do I stand a chance of getting a walk in reservation??
Thanks in advance

We traveled last May on a last minute trip. We booked one week prior to going. We were able to get most of the ADR's we wanted but I had to call everyday and check the board here for canceled ADR's.
I do know that I had no problem getting an ADR for Sci-Fi, although we ended up canceling it.

They are worth a vist. Just good luck with getting them. It's a very busy time of year.

can be fun. The food can be so so but the burgers and shakes are best option. Burgers are on the menu for lunch but sometimes can be ordered at dinner.

I like it because it's kitschy. I grew up going to drive-ins because my parents couldn't afford theaters so I have fond memories of them. My wife doesn't understand at all and my kids think some of the things shown are corny and funny.

It sounds as if you don't want to make an ADR far in advance. If not you can call Disney Dining the day you want to go and ask for openings. Or just go to the restaurant. If you go earlier in the service cycle e.g. 11:00 AM for lunch or 4:00 PM for dinner, you will have a better chance of getting in.

The last week of May is a somewhat crowded time of year. Colleges and schools are just starting to get out and Memorial Day is the 31st. If there are places you really want to try, I'd advise making an ADR for it.

As far as Sci-Fi goes, the atmosphere kind of makes it worth the visit, however the food is not all that good. Mama Melrose is also hit and miss. The only TS I suggest to people for DHS is 50's Prime Time Cafe. The atmosphere is fun and the food is much better than Sci-Fi, IMO.

Thats great thanks for the advice guys, I think i'll break the habit and make the ADR before we go this time!

Don't be discouraged if you can't get an ADR at a resturant that you want. Last year we tried before we left and everyday we were in Disney to get a breakfast ressie for Crystal Palace to no avail. We broke the new to my SIL while waiting for the bus one morning and a lady in front of us turned around and asked if we had tried just walking up to the podium and asking (duh, now why didn't we think of that :confused3) Anyways we went straight there when we got to the MK and were seated within 15min so always ask cause you just never know.

I would say book ressies and if you don't want to do them cancel them the day before. Since you haven't experienced dinning it is a must, at least for us. So to chance it especially to get where you want it is best to make and adr and not risk not getting in.
DW has so many good places!

You should be able to get a reservation if you keep trying on the online system. As to whether they are worth it or not... look at the menus at allears.net to see if the prices seem okay to you. We feel that the Sci Fi is just not worth it for the quality of food you get.

We were able to get same day ADRs for Saana and Yak and Yeti first week of January. I would make ADRs at any restaurant you think you may want, and then you can always try to cancel or change them last minute.

My DH and I are AP holders and have noticed that it has been easier to walk in to restaurants lately. Guest Relations told us that while all the ADRs may be taken and a restaurant appears booked, we should always walk up because restaurants sometimes save tables for walk ups.

You specifically asked about Mama Melrose - we walked in there for dinner with no ADR about 2 weeks before Christmas with no problem. We only waited about 10 minutes for a table.
