Adoption Updates

Just wanting to check in with all of you fellow adoptive parents.

Wednesday, DS and I just celebrated the first anniversary of our adoption being finalized. Its hard to believe how time flies once you become a parent! My shy, timid little guy that arrived in early 2007 has turned in to a social, very vocal and energetic three year old. It is so amazing to see how he has blossomed.

Hello All,

Has anyone had experience with a surrogate?
It is something we are now thinking about but I'm just not sure....

TIA

not exactly adoption but we are doing kinship foster care for our niece & nephew. its been a big adjustment as were still in our honeymoon stage (been married 3 years but wasnt planning on kids for a while) however having kids has been an awesome experience, were actually planning our first trip with the kids to disney this february. the court system back in illinois was frusturating at times but in the end we have given our niece & nephew a better home & future.

best wishes to all of you!

About 2 weeks ago the one couple we know (who pulled out of Guatemala) got a 10 month old baby boy! His name is Daniel!!:cool1: They didn't tell anyone the first week, just got to know him and they were waiting to make sure they could adopt him. He came from foster care.

My cousin and his wife have 1 yr old twin boys that were carried by a surrogate. The boys are biologically theirs. They have very possitive things to say. It is expensive I know.

A question, there was a poster who had a picture of her soon to be adopted daughter named Lily. I don't want to go through this whole thread, did she finally get to bring Lily home? I never see a post with that picture and I used to see her post a lot. Just wondering. TIA

Was it my Lilly you were reffering to? She came home last January. There was another woman adopting a Lily from China. That actually fell through, It is a really sad situation and she is not around now.

That is just so great that you accepted this responsibility and that it's working out. My DS's best friend got a new brother who had been his cousin earlier this year. The 4 yo boy is much better off in his new home than he was in his own and has adapted to having 2 sisters and a brother very well.

I had to serch down this thread because for some reason I was not subscibed to it any more.

Since I am here, I will announce that we are in the home stretch! One more clas to go, and the home study will be complete, 3 more papers to get and the dossier is done, then the waiting game begins.

I think I screwed up though, I am just about to send in my I-600A, but I noticed on the dossier instructions that I have to include the preliminary approval of that. I guess I should have done it earlier

Well, here is hoping that we spend our birthdays in Ethiopia instead of Disney this year....I won't miss my disney trip for most things, but I am happy to not be going this time!!

Hipchickie, Congratulations for being in the home stretch. Good luck with getting that I-600 out of the way. I got mine in like 4 days after mailing them everything (in CA) so hopefully you are somewhere quick like that. How long is your wait expected to be?

oh, you have made my night!!!! - I thought it would be weeks or even months.
We are adopting an older child (up to age 5), so the wait can be anywhere from 1 month to a year.

Thats awesome. When we were in Ethiopia at WHFC's place we fell in love with the 4yo kids there. There were 2 girls (sisters) and 1 boy in particular that we just adored. I think about them often. If we were ever to adopt again it would be a 4-5 yo from Ethiopia. :)

we are using WHFC too - did you adopt in Ethiopia through them?

I have talked to a lot of families about the technical stuff, but now that it is getting closer, my 7 year old is asking about the little things....how is the WHFC house to stay at? Do they have a pool? ( he is 7, afterall) How soon do you get to meet "the new kid" (as he calls him) does it get cold at night, etc etc

Yes we did use WHFC. Love them. :)

We travelled with our (then) 4 and 6 yo's and my parents. We stayed at the Hilton which had a pool and a playground, as does the much more expensive (and much nicer) Sheraton... both offer adoption discounts. The other family who travelled with a child stayed at the WHFC guest house and ended up moving to the Hilton because their other son was bored at the guesthouse and they felt like they didn't have much privacy. Others LOVED staying at the guesthouse, so it all depends. For us the guesthouse is very nice but the nannies can be overbearing. It's one thing with your new child... They are so good with the kids and the attachment to them is obvious and can be a HUGE help there particularly with the older children and language issues. But your other child may feel pretty restricted in the guesthouse and the nanies will mother them too, which they may or may not welcome (mine enjoyed it at first but were over it quickly, especially dd because the nannies were always wanting to braid her hair and she hates having her hair done).

Food is easy to find if you don't stay at the guesthouse. But we spent WAY to much on bad food eating at Hilton (they serve bad, expensive American style food). We should have made use of Yonas or Mulat from WHFC more and had them take us to restaurants they recommended. Whenever they did we ate well for under $10 (for our entire party and treating the driver).Sometimes we got Ethiopian food (which we all love) but American food and Italian food are also prevalent.

It does get chilly. We were there in the summer/rainy season. And wore layers. Pants, t's and sweaters/hoodies worked great for the changing temps. I've heard the same from friends who travelled in the winter. When you go on your birthfamily visit dress in extra layers and plan on sleeping in your clothes and maybe not catching a shower at that hotel. Ours was fine but maybe not the cleanest I've ever stayed in. ;)

We arrived in Addis around noon from our flight. Hilton picked us up at the airport. We called Mulat/Horizon House as soon as we arrived at the Hilton and he met us there 15 minutes later and took us to Horizon House. They had woken our son (then 2 1/2) up from his nap and as soon as we walked in the door (probably 1:30pm) they placed him in my arms. So once we were in Ethiopia it didn't take long to meet him at all. Because of the rains we couldn't do the birthfamily vist until our 3rd day so he stayed at the orphanage until we finished that and then came home with us for the rest of our time.

Hope that helps. I remember I had tons of questions. So feel free to ask away.

Thank you for all the info!!! It is so much more comforting hearing it from a parent who has gone through it :)

My cousin and his wife got their referral for their son in Korea!! He's a cutie! He's 5 months old and they hope to go get him in 4-6 months!! They've been waiting about 14 months for this!

Micah starts preschool next week, so we had his check up today.

Height is 40.5 inches. In that one year he grew 8 inches, and went from 3rd percentile to 97th! He is now, at age 3 taller than either of my other kids were at 5 (they've always been really tiny for their age).

Weight is 42lbs.

Developmentally right on target for age 3. Language was higher than expected and everything else was right within the normal range. His accent is almost completely gone. :(

All the health concerns we had last year resulting from the malnutrition and parasites are resolved. He has one lingering skin issue (a non-contagious rash that pops up on his wrist every few months, an immune reaction to him being exposed to scabies way to young). And he has been getting some pretty intense dental work on his 3 year molars (malnutrition definitely showing there... they are soft). But besides that you would have no idea this kid was ever starving.

any updates ?????? Im not adopting but i love to hear your stories on the process!!

well we are officially matched, we requested a waiting child, and the paperwork was finalized, now we wait to travel.
His name is Tariku, he is 4 1/2, and he is adorable.
Hopefully it will take 4-5 months to go through the courts, so we *should* be traveling this spring in April or May at the latest (fingers crossed!)

I can't wait, I am trying not to think about it so that it goes by faster.

Update on Madeline:

We are leaving this Saturday for WDW. She's only 2, so she doesn't really get what is going on but I'm telling her that we're going to go on an airplane and we're going to go and see Goofy in Disney. I'm getting very excited to take her! She talks my ears off ALL day long. She's a little energizer bunny. We are thinking of doing a domestic adoption this year.... we'll see! :)
