Adobe Photoshop and CS

I can see your pics just fine since doing what I suggested to others that can't see them..

Hi. I was wondering if someone experienced with PS can help me out.

I'm trying to create a webpage collage with numerous photos randomly placed at various angles. I'm using small thumbs with a stroke border. It looks great when the pics are at a flat 90-degree angle. But when I rotate the images, I get a jagged stairstep effect on the edges.

Here's an example:

Any idea how I can rotate pictures with a thin border, and keep the edges a smooth line? Thanks for all your help.

Dave

I have used a friend's copy of PS CS to try running some of Boutwell's free actions and it gives a message that it can't run a "make" command. I assume this is why he says it's not compatible with CS. I'd like to get CS2 if I can find it cheap so I can buy those actions but I don't know where to find it, any recommendations? Or if I can get the friend to upgrade to cs3 and give me their CS copy, is there a way to run those actions if I do something manually?

Thanks! :goodvibes

If you are a student or teacher, then go here. Great prices. If not, then I think you're going to pay a premium. Check to see if the actions will work with PS Elements. If so, you'll save a bundle.

I appologize if this has been asked already, but I've never used photoshop so I was wondering if there's different versions and if so which one everyone likes using. I was also wondering if you can use it to create the kinds of photos where it's in B&W but one part of the picture is in color. Like in a wedding picture of a bride where the bouquet may be in color but the rest is in B&W.

Photoshop Elements is a less expensive version of Photoshop that has most of the functions- including the ones necessary for selective color.

I personally have Photoshop Elements version 5.0 and I LOVE it!! I've created several pictures like the one you're talking about with it. I do know though, since I bought mine they have come out with version 6.0 and I think 7.0 is now out. Good luck and NEVER be afraid to ask ANY questions here!!! :thumbsup2

Adobe makes Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements. They also make Lightroom.

I would choose Elements unless, you take lots and lots of pictures (thousands on a trip, hundreds in a day). Then I would get Lightroom. Lightroom is more efficient for processing large numbers of pictures.

I would get Photoshop CS3 if you are going deep into graphic design work or if you are doing lots of repetitive tasks (it can record macros), or doing extensive editing with RAW files (it has more 16-bit tools).

CS3 is a lot of extra money. It's not worth it for most people.

You may also want to look at Photoshop alternatives. There is a free program called GIMP that is very popular. Some people here are big Paint Shop Pro fans as well.

Gimp is pretty good especially for the price FREE but I started using paintshop pro many years back and find it easier to use for me. I just got the newest version so I'm still learning all the new features but I like it.
Not real hard to use and can do more than pictures witch comes in handy!

Thanks for the replies everyone! :thumbsup2 I'm starting school to get an associates degree in web graphic design. I wonder if I'm going to need photoshop or a comparable program anyways :confused3 Considering I'm a newbie, but I like to take a lot of pictures (although I don't think I've ever taken more than about 80 in one day) maybe I should check out Elements.

If you are starting classes, you should probably wait. See what your professors/ instructors recommend. You may even be able to purchase the program recommended at a reduced rate through the program.

I have photoshop CS3. I took a class through our local arts center that also has version CS3. But my teacher teaches middleschool as his regular job, and had purchased the photoshop 7.0 with multiple licenses or registrations, and he offered the 7.0 version for $30.00 each for whoever wanted it. (he had 4 left)

If you are using it for web design, you might also need Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator and or Photoshop (I have all of them and am slowly learning how to use them). Wait & see because it is cheaper to buy those programs bundled than it is to buy them each one at a time.

I use photoshop elements, but I did try photoshop CS3 first and saw it was far more than what I needed. You can try all the programs for 30 days on adobes site. See which one seems to work for you and as stated by another poster wait to see what your instructor wants you to use.

I never even thought of seeing if they had a trial version  I wish they had a DUH smiley on this board :) Between starting school, getting this new camera and learning how to work it and planning my trip my brain feels like mush anymore!

i'm a web design student as well and i use photoshop all the time - not just for photos but also for mocking up sites, creating graphics (headers, footers, navigation elements, etc.). i'm sure you can do this with the gimp as well, but photoshop is the industry standard.
i know of one site that gives a deep discount on the entire suite (photoshop, illustrator, flash, dreamweaver, fireworks, indesign), drop me a pm if you'd like the info.

I am a web development student, several of my courses required Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc. JourneyEd.com sells the student version of CS3 at a great discount, other student stores do also. If you qualify for the discount it is a great way to get into Adobe software.

For what you are trying to do, Adobe CS3 does it, and does it very well. When applying it to what you would like to do, is very easy to use, it's an excellent program all around with very much help out in the web.
