admitted to the hospital

Oh man! I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're ok. My wife is 29 and used Nuvaring for 3 or 4 years. I hope that doesn't happen to her! I just really hope you are ok.

I'm so sorry to hear this...but glad they caught it!

My DH had a double pulmonary embolism in Jan. 2009. He was on Lovenox injections for two weeks until the coumadin levels were high enough. Then he had to go monthly for blood work to make sure his levels were steady. He was tested for clotting issues and hereditary issues...and we never found out what caused his. He does, however, get migraines all the time so that could have something to do with it. He is 37.

I would like to say that this is uncommon is young people...but I now know of almost half a dozen people that have had pulmonary emboli, and all have been under age 40.

I hope you respond quickly to the blood thinners/treatments...and that you never have to deal with another clot!

Hi neighbor! I'm sure it's been done, but have them check you for Factor V Leiden. I had two strokes when I was 19 (during pregnancy) and that's what they found out I had. A lot of birth controls will cause blood clots. If they didn't check it out, you should ask.

Forgot to add that the depo shot will most likely work for you if it turns out that you have a clotting disorder. I've been on it for a few years and it's great.

:wave2: Well Hello Pebbles! We have just decided that hubby will go take care of the birth control on his end. The doc wasnt going to do the clotting disorder genetic test since no one else in my family has ever had a clot, but now that will probably change as my grandpa has been admitted just down the hall to me for the same thing, a clot in the lung, he also has bladder cancer, so once i tell doc that then he will probably change his mind.

Have you been tested for clotting disorders? I was hospitalized two weeks post partum for a DVT. It turned out, I have a condition called factor five Leiden.

Me, too, but a little bit later than two weeks. At the time, they blamed my Depo Provera shot that I got at 2weeks PP, but we later found out I have Factor V Leiden. Seven clots and several surgeries later, I'm on daily injections.

You'll probably be on coumadin or heparin/lovenox for a while and go for weekly prothrombin time tests to make sure your blood doesn't clot too quickly. Each vascular surgeon has a different comfort zone on what's good, for me it was 14-18 seconds.

There are other clotting disorders, too. Each of them is pretty simple to do labs.

Heads up, it will make your periods very interesting while you're on it.

Please follow your doctor's orders to prevent one of those clots breaking free. I know it's not fun to be stuck in a bed, especially with kids at home, but it's for your safety.

Funny how quickly they determined your clot. I would consider blood testing.

Not to scare you, but my story....

I have had 3 PEs, and 2 DVTs. Each time I got different explanations....birth control, pregnancy, long trip, etc. Turns out that I have a clotting disorder (prothrombin mutation, factor 2). I'm on coumadin for life. I wish they had known about this after my first episode, but the testing is only 5+ years old.

Good luck!

God bless! Hope you start feeling better very soon. That would have been very scary. Good thing you called the squad and payed attention to your body's symptoms.

My 17 year old niece had a stroke last year. The cause was her birth control pills. My BIL is a pediatrician and he says it's becoming more common in teenagers and adult women. Scary

How scary!!! So glad you got help and are on the road to recovery!!! Sending lots of good vibes your way!!

I had a massive blood clot in my leg from birth control. They had never seen one so large. They tested me for a clotting disorder but it was the b/c. I knew I had been going to the hospital too much for blood testing when the tech remarked on my new hair style. I am thankful to be alive.

What a scary time for you. for some reason I obsess over having blood clots so your situation is my nightmare. Please make sure you get all the tests done as I have a friend whose 8th grade son developed a blood clot in his arm and ended up having surgery etc. He has the genetic clotting disorder. He's okay now, but had several hospital stays and is on coumadin.

Safety Mom - I just love your signature pic. It cracks me up every time I see it.

OP, how scary! SO glad you went in when you did and they found it. Wishing you speedy recovery! :wizard:

So glad they caught it in time for you. I'm on coumadin and will be for the rest of my life due to DVTs and subsequent clots 2 years ago. Turns out I have a clotting disorder called Anti-phospholipid Antibody Syndrome. Be safe and take care of yourself!

Not entirely sure if all my stuff was brought on by my bcp's but I suspect that it was.

Well monday night i had sharp shooting pains in my left thigh and then they went away by tuesday morning, then tuesday night i started having some dull pain in my left side ribs and into my back, i woke up at 3 am in severe pain but then was able to sit in my recliner and be relativley pain free, then wednesday the pain just got proggressivly worse and later that evening around 8ish i was having trouble breathing, along with the severe pain, so i called an ambulance. I honestly thought it was a kidney infection or kidney stones.

the Er was full so they were going to put me in the waiting room until the nurse saw me, then she got me to pee in a cup and then rushed me to a room where they then had about 4 staff members in there and put an IV in did blood work, then IV fell out, so they put it in again, then it infiltrated, so then they had to get a specialist in there to put in a smaller one in my other arm, all the while I could barely breath, they got oxygen for me, put cool clothes on me as i was sweating profusley, and gave me some pain meds, once the pain meds kicked in it was much easier for me to breath

then they took me for a cat scan with no contrast, and thought they seen kidney stones. then the radiologist said no its not stones, its just calcium deposits, so then they did an xray and seen a fuzzy area in my lungs, so they thought it was pnemonia, and then the blood test to see if it was a clot came back elevated so they took me for a chest cat scan with contrast,. and then discovered i had a clot in each lung.

they said if i would have waited any longer to come in I wouldnt have made it. so they admitted me, and i immediatley started on Heprin IV, and then coumadin tonight, and once my INR number is at a level 2 then they can send me home. but i will be on the coumadin for 6 months, and will have to have my blood checked every week, and the clots will resolve on their own

How scary!

You sound like you're handling what happened rather well.:goodvibes. So many people get into emergency situations and put off seeking immediate medical attention. I'm glad that you called the ambulance. :thumbsup2

Take it easy and feel better soon. :goodvibes:goodvibes

OP--I am so very happy that you are ok. You are so lucky.

For those reading that are paranoid about clots, you can go to prepaidlabs.com and order yourself the D-Dimer test right now. You just take the slip you print out on your computer to a participating lab (it will show you on the site where you can go) and you will get your results in a few days.

All for under $50.

How scary! I'm sorry that you're in the hospital but glad that they caught this. I hope that you get out and get well soon.

I just remembered my daughter's good friend is 16 years old. Last year she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The doctor said he thinks it was caused by her birth control pill. They aren't doing surgery yet but she does have to get monthly blood draws and MRIs every few months.

I had a blood clot in my leg at 21. I feel ya OP! Conversely though, the hospital sent me home with some lovenox shots and a script for coumadin...

Just take it easy, take your meds, and BE VERY CAREFUL not to get a nick or scratch that could cause you to bleed. Monitor your levels very carefully too. Get all the blood draws they ask for!

There are other BC options, I was not allowed to take regular BC after my clot, but they do have progesterone-only pills (POP). Talk to your doctor about your options. (IUD is another...)

For some reason BC causes clots - it's not fair!

Take care of yourself! You should be able to get this all taken care of and may not have to be on coumadin for the rest of your life. Best of luck to you!
