For 80s kids, remember the Presidential Fitness Test? I HATED (did I say HATED) that darn thing. The long jump was about all I ever did well on and that's just because I'm tall I think.

Ugh that was still very much a thing in the 90s too. I was not great at any of it ... or PE in general for that matter. We did have the scooters and the parachute game though, those were fun.

Aaaaaaand my 500th post is officially about the Presidential Fitness Test in a "closed" thread :rotfl:

See, those Presidential Fitness Tests paid off.:P

I feel like, as 70s & 80s kids, we are lucky to be alive. My neighbor had a really steep, long ditch that backed to a highway. We would go sledding down that hill and would shoot out across the highway. So basically we played real life Frogger.

This is so true!!! When I was in the 4th grade, I would venture by myself down the street, across the railroad tracks, and then across a local highway, to visit a local grocery store (to buy diapers for my Tender Love baby doll) or to the gas station to buy either bubble gum ice cream cones, bubble gum candy cigarettes, or cough drops (which I ate as candy). There are so many red flags in those scenarios that it is hard to unpack. :rotfl:

Gosh, we had so much freedom back then that our kids have never gotten to experience.....sigh

I would walk to the store to buy my mom cigarettes and she said i could keep the change-I was 10 yo. The cigs were 80 cents and I could buy a ton of penny candy with the change. Kool Filter kings was her brand until 2010 when her and my dad quit smoking.

I guess I shouldn't admit that when we walked all that way to the store, the cigarettes we bought weren't for our mothers :D Different times I guess! Otherwise, fireballs, nerds, and now & laters with a big old slush puppie were our go tos.

I started elementary school in the late sixites. From what I remember, we had defined modules that would last a few weeks each. I loved PE and the gym teacher. He was somewhat of a local celebrity and had a great affinity for squre dancing.. I still remember the girls get tossed a little too much by over zealous boys.

no modules in k-6th for my former school district, and no dedicated pe teachers until jr. high b/c in the state i grew up in that would have been a single subject credential which was exclusively used for 7th-12 grade (our k-6th teachers taught pe as well and the only time during the week

that evil test has it's roots dating back to the 1950's so us old folks were subjected to it as well.

i grew up on a steep street with sidewalks on both sides of the asphalt driving surface. one year the weather got so hot the sidewalk on one side buckled and thus was born our neighborhood 'launching pad' there was many a kid who ended up injured to the extent of broken arms either skateboarding down the hill at full speed or riding their bikes and launching into the air and into oncoming traffic.

I kicked butt at that. I was in gymnastics at that age, so both strong and flexible. The stretch, pull ups, and flexed arm hang, I had the best results, even beating all the boys. It was only run portion I struggled with. Just don't ask me to do any of it now!

We had the parachute, but I don't remember scooter things at all.
