Does anyone here know which car rental companies charge an additional driver fee for a spouse? I know that with National's emerald club, there is no fee for a spouse as an additonal driver. I have been charged the fee by Alamo, although it was in Ft. Lauderdale, not Orlando. I am trying to decide whether to rent a car for our trip next month, and found a pretty good rate through Dollar. When I look on their web site for information about additional drivers, it says

At most DOLLAR locations, an additional authorized driver will be required to pay an additional fee; however, spouses, employers, co-workers and others may not be required to pay this fee

Does anyone know whether they actually charge an additional driver fee for a spouse or not?

I was told in Orlando, they do. Best to call dollar and ask.

I don't think they have to pay if you have Dollar's frequent rental card (I forgot what it's called) Hertz also does not require spouces to pay if you are a AAA member. Otherwise every agancy in Orlando will make you pay. But Gail is right. Your best bet is to call and find out.

Thanks - I did call, and Dollar does charge the fee in Orlando. I usually rent from National, and since I have an Emerald club membership, I don't have to pay an additional driver fee for DH. But, I hadn't been able to find as good a price with National as Dollar. I lucked out, and by playing around with some contract codes and coupons, was able to pull up a better rate for National Emerald Aisle that I had found for Dollar anyway! Problem solved!
