adding protein to diet

I've always eaten cherries and almonds when I hit a plateau and they've helped me get off of it. I've heard salmon is another good plateau breaker food.

Cherries? That sounds like a coincidence to me. Cherries have all the nutrients necessary to cause a plateau.

It sounds crazy but everytime I've hit a plateau I've bought cherries and I'd lose weight. I heard that tip on a WW board so who knows. I figure if it happens to work I won't question it.

Fresh cherries are really slow to eat, unless you're pitting them in quantity and then gulping them down. You have to deal with the pit, either by eating around it or pitting them or spitting out the pits. You also have a visible record of the number of cherries you've eaten as your pit pile grows. By volume they're fairly low calorie too, and lots of people judge fruit servings by volume without considering the amount of waste/packing issues.

Agreed. It's definitely coincidence. Cherries have very little nutritional value, and don't contain any significant amount of protein.

Beans are not a quality protein source either, as they are mostly carbs.

I'm just curious as to why do you say that cherries have very little nutritional value? I understand that they don't have any protein, but they are very high in antioxidents. Also, one cup has approximately 90 calories and 3 grams of fiber. Do you think that's too many calories for a serving of fruit?

I always find it interesting to learn new things about the foods we eat. Thanks.

I wouldn't say that cherries have little nutritional value. Rather, cherries have a lot of natural sugar, which for many folks spikes appetite rather than suppresses it.

Little nutritional value in terms of weight loss. I was reponding the post that cherries helped someone break a plateau.

Cherries are basically just sugar. Even though its natural, it will still effect blood sugar levels, and if you eat enough of them they can hinder weight loss. Antioxidents have no impact on weight loss, and can be found in other sources without the sugar.

Generally, I think fruit is overrated, and should be used sparingly by anyone trying to lose weight.

Absolutely. I know that much of my weight problem these days is due to eating too much fruit, a practice I rationalized by saying that since I've given up french fries and the like, I could have as much fruit as I wanted. WRONG.
