Has anyone stayed on property and still gone to Universal? We are planning a trip at Xmas and would like to try to get to Universal for 1-2 days primarily for Potter. Did you rent a car for the day(s)? Want to take advantage of ME so not sure if we should skip this or try to make it work.

Dreams Unlimited sells one and two day Universal tickets that include transfers to and from Universal to your Disney hotel. Very convenient, since we like to not worry about driving and parking on our trips.

I am having the same thought for our trip in November.I would not rent a car personally I would just take a taxi to and from.My dilemma is also want to utilize ME but would like to stay one night at Universal for FOTL perk for 2 days but am having a hard time deciding whether or not to have the expense of having to pay for 2 rooms for the same night(both Disney and Universal resorts) but if I were going to do both parks at Christmas I would not be spending the $$$ for a room at Universal during the middle of our stay.So if you don't care to have FOTL access then I say just take a taxi.

Two years ago we took a day trip to Universal when staying at BW. We took a taxi. I think it was arounfpd $35 one way. However, that was for one dish. If I was going for two days, it would BR tempting to stash on site. Though with my family off 5, the new Cabanna bay would be great, but does not provide FOTL. So fir thus year, another trip to Disney :goodvibes

it was actually really easy. we bought our tickets online and had them already when the gate opened. we had gotten a cab companies number the night before at the POR front desk and called so there was a cab waiting for us the next morning. we were dropped off and after 9 hours in the harry potter corner of the park, we called the cabbie directly and he showed up where he dropped us off and took us back to disney.

renting a car would have been a little cheaper but then we'd have had to drive(and probably get lost), pay to park, and would not have been there at gate open. i got some great pics of just my kid in what looks like a totally empty hogsmeade. totally doing the same thing next trip too.

We used this ticket deal. From what I remember it was the same price as just buying universal tickets (no extra cost for the transportation). It was great, picked us up at the front of our Disney resort and then while at universal I called at least 2 hrs prior to when I wanted to leave and set our pick up time then they dropped us off right in front of our resort! Loved it. Got the two day tickets and it couldn't have been easier or more convenient. Highly recommend it.
Also the tickets were coded to let us in for early entry. Which was AWESOME!! WWoHP was fantastic first thing in the am with very few people there!

Our first trip we arranged transfer and found that a pain, the second we did a split stay and found that a bigger pain :) So last time we rented a car, we also drove to Busch gardens at Tampa which we liked so much we dropped a Disney day to go back for a 2nd day.
The car gave us flexibility around what time to get there and leave, gave us time to dine/shop at city walk as well.
There is a car rental place on site at wdw in one of the non Disney hotels near dtd

This August we want to do Universal too for 3 days. So we booked our first 3 days at a Universal Resort to get early entry and Front of The Line perk. Then we will move to wdw. We can still use DME for return to MCO.

In Aug 2012 my friend and I stayed at CBR and went to Universal for one day. We bought our tickets at AAA and then used the Mears bus for transportation to and from Universal. We called the night before and it was about $15 each for the round trip price. We just called about an hour before we were ready to leave the parks I think and then met at the bus pick up area. It was easy and I'm planning on doing it again this August! Definitely worth it. I think there is some of the information for this on the transportation board.
