Adding Points After Resale Buy

After 2 years of watching, waiting, and contemplating, I see there is a great buy at one of the major Disney resellers: 50 points at OKW, for about $73 per point (IF it passes ROFR at that price!).
I would really like 90 points at OKW or AKV. My questions are:
1. How easy would it be to add 40 points directly from Disney? I suppose I'd be on a waiting list for the corresponding UY?
2. I know there are no closing costs when adding from Disney. However, would the Disney price (I don't know how much they charge per point) be so high as to negate the savings on closing costs buying more points retail (i.e., approximately $500)?
3. If I added 40 points for AKV (if that's even available) would that mean I could book there early?
Thanks. You guys are the greatest.

be sure to post your results on the ROFR thread.

really easy. for OKW, i'd be surprised if you had to wait. be aware that all direct OKW add-ons have the extended 2057 expiration date.

2. I know there are no closing costs when adding from Disney. However, would the Disney price (I don't know how much they charge per point) be so high as to negate the savings on closing costs buying more points retail (i.e., approximately $500)?

if you don't care about the extra years, the resale might still be cheaper...the direct price is $101 IIRC.

3. If I added 40 points for AKV (if that's even available) would that mean I could book there early?

for those 40 AKV pts, yes. for your 50 OKW pts at AKV, no.

You can add on 25 points or more at any time after becoming an owner as long as points in use year are available. With AKV that may not be much of a problem because it is still selling and thus Disney keeps adding units for sale with the varying use years. With OKW, your risk of a waitlist is significantly higher but evenutually those usually come through, although wait can be fairly lengthy. If you add 40 at AKV, it would be $104 a point -- if you add 100, you can get $8 per point off that price. OKW, I believe is at $101 a point with no large point incentive.

If you have 50 points at OKW and 40 at AKV it means you can book OKW 11 months out using only the 50 OKW points or book AKV 11 months out using only the 40 AKV points, i.e., you can't change any points' home resort stripes just because you own at two resorts.

Thanks. Now I realize 2 things:
1. If I buy the extra 40 points at another resort, if I want to book at OKW 11 months out, it would have to be using only the 50 points. Therefore, I'm better off adding OKW points, as that would give me more flexibility.
2. Since Disney is about $20 more per point than resale, buying the extra 40 points from Disney would cost me $800 extra, more or less. Therefore, if closing with resale is less than that, I'd save money with resale.

With banking and borrowing, 50 OKW points could provide up to 150 points for a reservation every 3 years.

Resale closing costs will range upwards of $250 depending on the number of points involved. If you can find a resale with the same Use Year, DVC can even add it to your first contract as long as the deed is titled exactly the same as your original. Otherwise you will just have another separate contract - requiring a little more accounting to track and use the points. It can easily by accomplished.

All of the OKW points available thru DVC have the extended expiration date (2057) - at this time very few resales have the extended contract. If the additional 15 years are of any importance to you, it may be worthwhile at least searching for an extended resale purchase - the few sold have been only minimally higher than the non-extended OKW resales.

Good luck with your decision.

If you truly want OKW you can likely find a slightly larger package actually cheaper overall. You could end up with 115-120 or so points resale for about the same price as 50 pts resale plus a retail add on of 40 points. But as Doc points out you can do quite a bit with 50-75 points if you are creative.

I just have to start by saying the people on WDW are the most gracious . . .
In 2057, I'll be 104 years old, so I'm not too worried about that expiration; I'm more worried about MY expiration!
I've been crunching the numbers for a while now, and I've figured 90 is my sweet spot . . . use X points year one for Savannah view, borrow some from year 2, year 2 stay in OKW borrowing one point from next year, year 3 . . . etc.
More points would give more headroom, but I don't want to pay MF for points I don't think I need. Therefore, I now see I can get 70 points for $2 more per point than the 50 I was admiring. With 70, I could then buy 20 more from Disney. With only 20, the $20 or so more Disney charges is made up in not paying extra closing fees.

Sounds like a great plan! :) I'll be 110 in 2057 myself.
Enjoy! :teeth:

Keep in mind the minimum add-on from Disney is 25 points.

We just did this, OP. We bought 50 pts resale. We did it because we didn't need the 160 pt. minimum. We closed in June. Two weeks ago, we called our guide and added another 50 pts. It was so easy. The pts. were in our account in less than 24 hours. We did not pay closing costs because we were exsisting members and we got 50 2007 pts and will have our 50 2008 pts on Friday. (Aug UY)

Now, we purchased HHI because that is where we will go more often. Our closing costs on our resale contract were nearly $800. So, for us, the higher pt cost thru Disney actually equalled that. The amount we paid for both contracts was identical. I think HHI is the exception in buying direct or buying resale. SC law now requires an attorney to close on a real estate interest.
