If we were owners at SSR, and then added on through resale at another resort (lesser number of points) would it be wise to try for the same use year? I guess I mean if we owned at two, does that open up two 11 month windows, or am I limited to a rental that does not exceed the points in the lesser contract? (Hope that makes some sense!). (If I had 100 points at BWV and 200 at SSR, could I make a reservation that would use over 100 points at BWV at 11 months out?)

Can someone help to clarify?

Yes you could make a reservation for the BWV for 100 points at 11 months and at SSR for the 200 points at 11 months. You could not use all 300 at the 11 month window for either resort.

It is a lot easier to have one use year but many people are successful with two (me included), especially if you are a well organized person.

Thanks for asking the question! I, too, have questions along these lines. I see where people add on 25 points or so at their nonhome resort. How will this benefit me? The only thing possible I could see doing is banking and borrowing and using 75 points in one year. What I am asking is like the poster (I think). I am not seeing the benefit because if I only have 25 pts to use I will have to make my ressie 7 months out to use my other points so why not have them all at one resort?

I can think of a few reasons.

1. As you suggested, want to "get their foot in the door" at another resort. I doubt that there are many 25 point add-ons at different home resorts, but with 50, you could have a decent stay every 2-3 years on those points.

2. Other home may be sold out. Yes, you could always waitlist, but some may have a reason to NOT want to waitlist (need points for a pending trip.)

3. In the case of SSR, the additional 12 years may be appealing.

No, there aren't a lot of really compelling reasons for small add-ons at separate resorts. But it could make sense depending upon the circumstances.

I can imagine an add-on at one extra resort with just enough points to generate a nice visit every 3 years. But unless you have money to burn, you might want to avoid a dab of this and a dab of that.

Just to confirm, I have 100 at HH and 230 at OKW, same use year. If I want to book at the 11 month window for OKW, I can only use OKW points, having to borrow from next year if I need more. I can't use the 100 HH points at the 11 month window for OKW. That's how I understant it. Is that right?

That's absolutely correct, which is why Freetime was questioning the logic of small add-ons at different resorts. With an add-on as small as 25 points, you still only have a maximum of 75 to use at any one given time (3 yrs pts, banked/current/borrowed) to make a ressie at that Home at 11 mos.

A reason that I have heard for small add-ons is that the price is right. For a couple of thousand dollars you can do a 25 point add on. For a resort like SSR that is going to be for sale for quite a few years, you could add on 25 points this year, 25 points at Christmas and 25 points when you get your tax return next year. It could add up over a few year period. If I only wanted to pay cash for a resort, this plan would work. This wouldn't have worked at one of the smaller resorts like BCV or VWL.

It is best to be the the same use year for small packages, esp if the same resort. IMO, for larger contracts at different resorts, it makes essentially no difference.
