Adding on Points

In reading several posts over the past few weeks, I have noticed that many of you have purchased at one resport, and then added on at another to build in flexibility in reservations. How does this work? We are thinking about purchasing at OKW via resale, because that resort is the best for us as a whole, but I can also see myself liking a couple of the others due to their less remote feel. OKW best fits us budget wise right now as well, with the points price, and maintenance fees. When you have purchased an add on, have you done so with a large allotment of points, or the minimum? Can one purchase a 50 point add on at another resort and at the 11 month window book there with those points, with the intention of using your other points from the larger point balanced home resort to pay for teh balance of the reservation. For example, say we purchased at OKW for a total of 180 points, but also bought an add of on 50 points at BWV? Could we then make a reservation with our 50 points at BWV to stay there at the 11 month window, with the knowledge that we would have the rest of the points available from our OKW points? Does this make any sense? I guess what I cam asking also, is that when making a reservation, do you have to actualy have the points in hand, or do they just have to be available at the time you arrive for your stay? Thanks so much for your help!

When making a reservation at an 11 month window (any time before the 7 month window, actually), you must have the total sum of points available at the time you will be staying. In other words, if you own 50 points at BWV and you plan a stay that will cost you more then 100 points, you will have to borrow 50 of your BWV points (or use 50 banked BWV points) to make the reservation. Borrowed points may NOT be returned to the original use year. Banked points must be used by the end of the year they are banked in. I don't think that what you are really looking to do is possible. I though of all of that before I purchased my OKW resale points. However, I don't mind staying at OKW at all. It has some great advantages over the other resorts (unit size, proximity to DTD, largest inventory, which makes it easiest to book at a later date, and we don't always plan our trips until 1 or 2 months or even weeks before we leave, and the fact that if we ever book a GV, I think I'd want it to be at OKW, and OKW has the greatest number of GV's). I have stayed at all of the resorts on property so far, including a SV at BWV, VWL at Christmas time, and had a ressie at BCV that I changed for BWV at the last minute. I have found the waitlist to be pretty darn good... Good luck with your decision!

The points for a reservation must be available at the time of the reservation (even if they are not available at the time you call). Right now you may make a reservation for dates thru December 23, 2004 regardless what your Use Year may be as long as you will have access to the points you'll need by this coming December.

The 11 month reservation priority is available for the points available at your home resort. If you have 50 BWV points, you could make a reservation 11 months ahead using only those 50 points (you can also borrow from the following Use Year and actually have 100- or bank this year's points and use next year's and the borrowed points to have 150 points available every three years).

You could use all 230 points (180 OKW and 50 BWV) to make a reservation at any DVC resort 7 months ahead.

Many here have purchased add-on contracts at different resorts and are able to enjoy the flexibility offered by that ownership.

Good luck! :) ( ... and WELCOME to the DIS!)

Thanks for your replies! As we get closer and closer to buying into DVC, you all have really helped us with our nitpicky questions as we overanalyze the whole thing. Thanks again!
