Hi - My DH and I are seriously considering adding on points through resale - we currently have an Oct use year and have been waiting for the right contract to show up.....but as we are waiting to find another Oct UY contract we have passed up on some pretty good deals on non-Oct UY contracts - so...what are the Pros & Cons of adding on with a different UY ?

I have heard people say always get the same UY - but then I read other posts where members have multiple UY's.

Can anyone shed some light on this for us ??

Thanks

I have a number of different use years but they were chosen to allow me the ability to book at the eleventh month window for when i wanted to go.:yay:

Use year has nothing to do with when you can book reservations. You can book at your home resort at 11 months from arrival, and at any non-home resort at 7 months.

I see two difficulties with differing use years -- one significant, the other not so much.

The sorta trivial one is that if you have two UYs, you have two banking deadlines. To me, that's just another detail about DVC to manage...no big deal. Of course, sometimes we have difficulty managing ONE banking deadline...

The REAL issue to me is the fact that you can't pool your points if you have different UYs. If you have different UYs, you're going to necessarily have different accounts, so to combine points from two UYs for a reservation, you will have to do a transfer. There are restrictions on transfers (one per year per account), so that can present real problems.

For that reason, and especially since you are already in DVC and are just looking at an add-on, I'd recommend sticking with your October UY unless it just does not work well with your vacationing pattern. If you have not experienced any issues so far, I'd stick with the simplicity of one UY.

As Jim mentioned, the biggest drawback to two UY's is that it is two completely different memberships.

We had two for a short time. The issue for us was that one contract was 130 points and the other was only 50. Neither one was big enough to get our entire 5 night trip booked at the 11 month mark without having to borrow points, which we did not want to do. We ended up selling and now all our points are under the same membership which we like.

So, if you do go with two UY's, be sure that the second contract is big enough to book the things you want with it.

Good luck!

I agree with op's, but I have 3 UY's:lmao:

I definitely enjoyed having 2 UY's, but the 3rd is a little too much. It's definitely a challenge, but I enjoy being able to pick and choose which one I use depending on my date of travel.

If MS says I dont have enough points, I just give them another number!:rotfl:

You definitely have to keep track of which UY you give MS especially if your home resorts are different because they wont know you have different Uy's until you give them the membership number.

The other thing is, if you add on, you have a choice of UY's and can add the UY that is most beneficial to you.

Not sure how this is enjoyable..:confused3 Seems like a real hassle to me. We have 9 contracts all under the same UY at 2 different resorts and it is much easier to deal with and manage the usage of our points.

We currently have 2 UY's because at the time I didn't know any better. Our Oct UY works best for us but as the OP stated, resale contracts are hard to find. Why DVD sells some months more than others is beyond me?

Having more than one UY can be done but why bother if you don't have to.

:earsboy: Bill

We have Oct. as well - and I would have to say that they seem to be harder to find. Although we don't plan on adding on yet, I'm always on the look out for the right deal. I plan to only buy another contract with my same UY. I have a feeling that I would mess it up if I had 2 diderent ones. I don't know if you've contaced the resale brokers, but I would call them and tell them what you are specifically looing for. When we bought our contract, it wasn't even listed yet. They may be able to give you a heads up on a new one before it is listed.

Thanks for the replys - I kind of thought that was the issue - so we will continue to search for the right one.

Thanks again.
