Adding Mom to DVC?

Hi All,

My husband and I have two BLT contracts. When we travel to Disney my mother ALWAYS goes with us, however she won't have a DVC member card because we didn't put her on the contracts.

Is there a way to add her to the contract (1 or both) so she has a card when we travel? I want her to have access to all the perks and discounts my family would receive as a member.

Is this possible? And, is this worth the hassle? Are the perks and discounts that great? We have not traveled to WDW as members yet.

I just called MS and they did not know, and told me to call QA on Monday.

Thank you!!!

Are both contracts under one membership number? If so, if you change on contract to add your Mom, you'd be looking at two separate membership numbers.

Really the biggest current advantage (assuming you don't all live in the same household) would be the DVC Member discount on Annual Passes.

Any loans on your contracts would have to be fully paid before a name change could be made. It is the equivalent of selling your membership; you'll need to get a ROFR waiver from Disney, fill out new deeds, and file those deeds with the appropriate county for the resort you own.

Any existing reservations may be cancelled during the transfer process, especially if they need to issue a new membership number, as your ownership is legally changing hands.

You can add your Mom as an associate member, but it would not give her a membership card or perks...associate members are basically people you have authorized to manage your DVC, making/cancelling reservations and banking/borrowing points.

This is not true when adding a family member but the existing owners are staying on the contract but is true if actually selling and therefore changing the names in general. I just did this last summer and had to make certain this was not a risk. Here the email.

As long as you are staying on the membership, the reservations will not
be cancelled.

Thank you,

I suppose if points were coming from each contract it could complicate things but I'm sure they can work it out.

I have the same situation with my mom. We just bought more points resale, but added on with the same resort and same use year. I asked our agent about adding my mom's name and he said that if the names on the two contracts didn't match exactly, then DVC would view them as separate contracts and not combine the points. I had also called MS about adding her - it would require a title change with they said would cost around $400.

If she's travelling with you, she could take advantage any of any discounts by having you make the purchase. The only perk she'd really miss out on would be AP's.

Do you think DVC will continue to give discounts on AP's? I am considering adding my in-laws to our contract so I would be able to purchase discounted AP's. I pay for their AP's so I should break even after 4 passes (4 x $100 discount) if there is a $400 deed fee. Is this worth the hassle? BTW, I trust my in-laws completely... now my parents would be a whole different story! :sad2:

I would guess the AP discount will be around for quite a while, but truly one never knows, it could change tomorrow.

Disney may decide to discontinue APs as we know them, in favor of some other ticketing scheme. That is exactly what happened with the Length of Stay passes when the Magic Your Way passes were introduced.

In truth, it will likely be much cheaper than $400 to change names, as long as the contracts have no loan against them. You would need to get the ROFR waiver, and you could fill out a quit-claim deed and file it wth the county, without a title search or closing company.

If the parents names are added, wouldn't the DVC contract then be considered part of their assets in case they would need to go into a nursing home, etc.? I could see adding names to a smaller contract, but I'm not sure I would add them to a large contract.

Most definitely. Anyone listed on the contract becomes equal owner(s). Nursing home payment, divorce settlement, financial woes, bankruptcy, even applying/qualifying for college loans, all affect or can affect the DVC or the individuals. The sale of the contract could be forced in the case of some court judgements, even.

I only have a small contract (200 points). Maybe it would be easier if I just bought them a small (50 pts) resale.

or a 25 point add on then change the ownership after that. You certainly don't need a closing agent to change the deed in that situation.

why not buy a 25 point contract in her name and either use those points every other year or 3rd year, or transfer them to your account every year and use them first,if you can afford that you can get a few more points and a little more flexability. Just my 2 cents

My parents live with us, does that entitle them to DVC perks as well? For example when buying annual passes can they purchase theirs at the same time with us with the discount?

They can get the AP discount if they live with you and many of the other perks if they are staying on your points. Unless they're routinely going without you, no reason to worry about adding them.
