I don't have an AP, but I'm on the phone right now adding a 2-night pre-stay to our free dining package. I added DxDP to the room only part (no tickets since we have the free dining package tickets) and only had to pay the $200 deposit.

The one time I did it, it had to be cancelled and rebooked as a ticketless package. The CM who took my call had to get guest services, and it was a lengthy phone call. These days when I want to book room-only but think there’s a chance I will want to add the dining plan later (it can be difficult to know how my family will eat more than 10 months out!), I call and ask for a “basic package”. This allows the option to book just the room with the option to add the dining plan later (edit: I am a passholder). I do it that way when I am booking a bounce back. I booked one last November for this September, and just this week called and added the dining plan with no difficulty.

The deposit would be $200 if you’re doing a package of any kind.

Once you add dining, it's a package now, its no longer a room only reservation (even though it is a ticketless package). The thing is that the reservation becomes subject to package rules for payment, cancellation and changes. Packages require a set deposit, and you must pay in full by a certain date, so if you are adding the dining plan after that date you would have to pay in full for it (and for any remaining balance on the room). If you're not past the pay in full date for packages, and your deposit for the room only reservation was less than the package deposit, you'll need to round up your deposit to meet package policies.

If the reservation was booked through Disney you can always add the DDP.

If booked through a 3rd party, there is a possibility you cannot add it.
