Adding a guest for one night of our trip

I have seen different responses to this and wanted to know if anyone has any recent experience. My DS13 has a cousin that lives near Orlando that we wanted to have stay with us for one hight of our trip. It is just the two of us, so no issue with room capacity. We are on a package with park tickets and have the dining plan. Some responses were that I would have to add him for the whole trip and to the package. Others have said that I can add him at check in and just pay for his meals and park ticket. We would really like to have him join us, but I can't afford to add him for the entire trip. Any feedback is appreciated.

Do you want to use any extra benefits with this cousin? Early entry or extra magic hours, whatever it’s called? If not, personally I wouldn’t bother adding them to the reservation. If you want the cousin to use some amenities, you can add as a day guest

If you add him prior to check in day, he has to be added for the whole trip.

What you want to do is wait until after you check in and the tickets and dining plan have been distributed and activated. Then you take your cousin to the front desk and add him for the one night. You may be asked to pay the additional adult fee for that night (sometimes we have had to, sometimes we haven’t).

Exactly what @fla4fun said. Your son is 13, so I’m guessing his cousin is also under 18? So you won’t have to pay an additional fee at all. If he is going to access SAB, he’ll definitely need to be on your reservation.. everyone’s magic band or key card needs to be scanned to show they’re a guest at the resort. If he has a magic band already he can use that. If not, the front desk will give him a key card.

Yeah they don’t widely publicize it (probably to thwart people from abusing it) but in cases like this where you have a package and someone else is popping in to your room for a night or two? The front desk will add them without having to change your package, at least that’s the result I’ve heard in every similar scenario over the years.

Just to add to the responses above... you'll want to purchase his ticket in advance and link it to a profile for the cousin -- does he have a profile on a parent's MDE account (if so you'll need to link as Friends & Family), or create a profile on your own MDE. Also include the cousin in headcount for an ADRs you make; you will need to pay out-of-pocket for his meals. Then add him to your resort room on the day he arrives.

We have traveled with his family in the past, so he is already on my MDE, and yes, I will include him the ADRs. Thanks for the tips.
