add on- resale or direct?

I own a resale boardwalk contract. We bought it after the first wave of limits were put on resales, but before the second wave. So I get all the discounts and the membership card, but I can't use it to go outside the dvc system (not that I would.) We are thinking of adding another 50-75 points in 2017. Ideally we want beach or bay lake, but we just did a split stay at poly and GF and liked them both so we wouldn't be opposed to one of them. Is there a benefit to buying direct at this point though?

Well, buying a small contract is really the only time to buy direct. You get a loaded contract and closing costs are less. If you have a Disney chase visa you can pay for it with that and get the rewards dollars which will cover much of the closing costs. And the biggest plus is that you can match the UY you already have. It can sometimes be hard to find a small contract in your specific UY via resale.

You would get the ability to trade out with the direct points (but not the resale ones you already own). Otherwise there aren't any other benefits to gain.

There are no true benefits to be gained, IMO. For resale 50-75 it comes down to price (savings) and UY availability. The smaller the contract or the smaller the difference between retail and resale price, the more reasonable it is to buy retail. The first question then becomes whether buying that option at all is reasonable. Usually the breakdown occurs around 50 points but for more difficult to find or newer properties it may be more reasonable to go direct and vice versa. As posted, BLT is likely the best value of the group listed. One thing I'd always do in this situation is take a hard look at the long term. Many may need more points than they're looking at but many may not need nearly as many points once kids get older and may not be able or willing to go routinely. I'd buy with 5 years from now in mind and if that means I don't need more points then, I'd make do now.

In my case my twins aren't even two so we have many family trips ahead of us. And my husband and I went about twice a year long before kids were even in the picture so after they get too "cool" for Disney, we will still go. lol And I do rundisney so even if my husband gets too "cool" for disney, i will still go! lol. But that is one reason I am willing to spend a bit more on multiple small contracts vs 1 huge one. I can divest myself as needed as the life situation evolves over the years.

Heres a question though, I think the new resales lose the discount perks and the card access. Granted these perks aren't guarantees in the future, but for the sake of argument, just say they are. What happens if I buy a resale today with those restrictions (no perks) and then sell my original contract down the line? Do I lose those benefits? Aka do I need to keep my first contract forever or buy a direct sale to get the lounge for example? My current contract is boardwalk and I like boardwalk, but you never know what the future will bring.

I don't think anyone can answer that question for sure since probably few people have bought and sold since the new restrictions were put in place. If you buy a different UY then I'm sure you would lose access to the perks since a different UY=different membership # and is considered a new master contract. If it is the same UY that's a little harder to say but since Disney has tracking methods in place to handle the first set of restrictions (i.e. They can tell which points are/aren't eligible for trading for cruises,Disney collection, etc.) I'd assume as new resale contracts are entered into the system they are listed as resale and carry the new restrictions. If that is the case once you sell your grandfathered contract I'd assume your account would not be eligible for discounted AP or any other benefit that requires member services to check your account. The DVC card that you simply show would still give you discounts as they don't actually check it against anything. That's why they now send them out with an expiration date.

As I understand it you would lose the perks.

I think I read that it's tied to the contract so if you buy a resale now and then sell your grandfathered contract you'd lose the benefits.

My twins are almost 18 and they still love WDW. They even asked to go there for their senior week trip.
