Add-on at the WLV. Please give me your opinion.

After visiting the VWL and reading some reports on them, and, in spite of believing that point value is lower than at the BWV or OKW, I am really interested in purchasing an add-on to the WLV for the sheer beauty of the resort. I would assume 50-60 points would be enough to add 2-5 nights (on a studio or 1-br) right before or right after staying at the Boardwalk Villas. However, my wife thinks that it is a total pain to change resorts and that I should not get an add-on. I guess women are more practical or maybe it is just that I can't shake off the Disney Bug. In any case, I would love to hear some of you fellow DVCers opinion.

I agree with you that inspite of how expensive (points wise) to stay there, I would do it again in a minute because of how beautiful it is over there (at least Disney makes you smile while they take you for every last cent!)

Anyway, another way you could look at it is that an add-on of 50-75 points would be enough for a week (with banking and borrowing) every 2-3 years in a studio and 6 nights (minus one weekend) or a full week (depending on season) in a 1br every 3rd year. This way you don't have to move mid-stay. BTW, this line of logic is not really working on my husband but you could give it a try with your wife (well he actually thinks we have enough points, can you imagine such a thing???)

I agree with your wife, I hate packing up and moving mid-trip. But, have seen lots of posts here from folks who enjoy switching resorts and experiencing a new view of things.

I also agree with Lisa above. Buy the add on, and bank/borrow so you can stay at VWL every third year. Gives you the best of boths worlds!

I was originally going to wait until they opened WLV, but decided to buy BWV in March of 1999. I haven't regretted my decision at all. By the way, prior to our purchase, we always stayed at WL in a courtyard view room. I still think WLV is beautiful, but I think I would personally miss having the courtyard view room.

I also considered an add-on to WLV, but didn't want to only purchase a small package for exactly the same reason as your wife. I personally don't like to move in the middle of a stay. I think it takes too much time away from you. I ended up adding more points at the Boardwalk. I figure I will just try at the 7 month window to get into WLV.

I also hate packing and unpacking. Who wants to waste time doing that when you could be "relaxing" at the parks or just hanging out? If you love the WL, I think Lisa had the right idea. Buy enough points to get you a week every other or every third year.

Hey Joe,
I agree that you could buy and then go every other year except, we all need to be honest about this, how many of us have that type of control ( hehehe) Those points are screaming for us to stay stay stay!!!! We have switched resorts, and although I don't "like" it, it's not that bad. The cons are that you lose a day's use of your room. The pros are that you get a nice shiny new room in another resort, and it feels like a new vacation.
Go with the original proposal and buy to use every other year, and I bet that it won't take that much convincing to get her to switch resorts when she sees those points "burning a hole" in your pocket! Good Luck.

hi joe: don't know whether or not this will help. in september, we spent our first 5 days at bwv, then switched to wl for the last 2. it was very simple. we just called bell services to check out, asked them to transfer the luggage to the wl, and spent the rest of the morning and ate lunch in epcot. when we drove to the wl, the room was ready and the luggage almost beat us up to the room. of course we kept a carry-on each in the car in case there were any snafus or the teens wanted to hop in the pool before we got our room. it was really quite painless other than the packing/repacking.

Pardon my ignorance (I'm a potential owner, haven't taken the plunge yet), but can't you use your 50 add-on WL points to extend your stay at the Boardwalk (rather than move from one resort to the other)? What am I missing here?

We are also considering a VWL add on. We don't mind changing resorts mid-trip...actually we kind of like doing it because it sort of makes us slow down a bit! But we're also looking at the possibility of banking and borrowing the VWL points to spend out vacation there every 2-3 years.

To mocpe- Though it is theoretically possible to use VWL add on points at BWV, they are still subject to the 7 month booking window at BWV...there is no guarantee that there will be availability at that point. The advantage of having points from both resorts is having the 11 mo. window at each resort with the corresponding points.

BWV is extremely popular. To book a stay there during popular periods requires an 11 mo. window. Since not all the points are BWV, the VWL would be subject to the 7 mo. ressie window. If you're lucky you may get it when you call 4 mo. later, but unlikely... That's why everyone is talking about changing resorts, because you can book both 11 mo. out & it's a sure thing, because you have home resort advantage at both. Banking/Borrowing gives you more points to use at a DVC resort at your 11 mo. home resort reservation window.

I hope I explained that correctly.... It is very confusing. It took me some time to understand it!
