Add-on at BLT or VGC

I just bought into DVC this past July (160 pts at BLT) and i'm already looking to add-on around 50 points. I'v narrowed my choices down to BLT or VGC because there both for 50 years and have the lowest dues. I spoke to my guide and i know now is the time to buy BLT because of the price increase, but VGC is a lot cheaper ($16 incentive vs. only $5 for BLT). So i'm wondering will it be better to have two home resorts or all my points at BLT. The other factor is use year, currently i have a feb use year, my guide said i could only get a sept use year for VGC but i could get the feb use year for BLT. Is having the same use year really importnat? I would probably only go to California maybe once every 3 or 4 years, but i'm thinking it would be nice to own at two separate resorts than have all my points in one. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Tough choice on where to buy and there's merits to both. If you do plan on going to DL regularly every 3rd year or so then it probably will be beneficial to own there. BUT I would definitely insist on the same UY. I'm more than doubtful that you received correct information about having to get a Sept. UY. I'd speak to your guide again and have him verify that. Tell him it's a deal breaker if you can't have the Feb. UY. And if you receive the same information I'd actually ask to speak to his manager.

I have two UY's and don't find it that difficult to manage but unless I had a very compelling reason to have a small contract at a different resort in a different UY I wouldn't do it.

well what my guide said was i can get a feb use year for VGC but since its not open yet i wouldn't get 2009 points. I can only get 2009 points if my use year is sept oct nov or dec. Does this sound right?

Ah - ok, that's mostly correct. June UY's and later are receiving 09 points. I have an April UY at VGC and did not get the 09 points. I also have an Oct UY but knew that in the long run because of the times I will go to DL and that I have a higher potential to have to cancel or adjust my vacations, that it will be better for me to have the Apr. UY. I didn't like not getting the points but I've gotten "extra" points on other purchases that others didn't so rather than maximize the VGC purchase I decided to go with long term suitability.

If I were in your situation and decided to purchase VGC I would keep the same Feb UY b/c in the long term it will give you easier use of all your points. With two UY's you will need to transfer between them if you need to combine points for booking at 7 months. You will have two different banking deadlines and two different "rule of four" deadlines. If you're extremely organized and feel comfortable in dealing with things like this it's doable but personally I wouldn't do it for 50 points.

Buy where you love to stay and don't buy based upon the current dues. It will get harder to stay where you want at 7 months and the dues can be adjusted at any time.

If you know you'll be visiting DL every 3 years or so, it may be a good idea to purchase the 50 points at VGC. Because VGC only has 50 units, it may be difficult to get the date and room you want if you're booking 7 months out. By banking and borrowing, you'd have 150 points, which can get you a pretty nice vacation. Even if the 150 points are not enough to cover your entire stay, you can always stay at a neighboring hotel/motel for the first few days. That's one of the nice things about DL, alternative lodging is very close.

We live in CA, and we recently purchased 160 points at BLT, and 50 at VGC. We go to DL once or twice a year, but we typically don't stay for more than 3 or 4 days, so the 50 points should be okay for us.

Just a reminder that by 2012 DCA will be in full swing with many new attractions not found in other parks. Having that 11 month window at VGC might be worth gold.

thanks for all the help I think i'm leaning more towards VGC because i know they're doing a major expansion that will be completed around 2012 so it would be nice to be able to book at the 11 month window. Also I had one more question, say i only have 50 VGC pts available at the 11 month mark, what would prevent me from booking say 2 nights on points and 5 nights cash just to reserve the room, then at the seven month mark apply the BLT points to the cash reservation so i have all seven nights on points.

DVC does not have a convert from cash to point option. And cash and point inventory are separate. They only way you can get a room with your BLT points at 7 months is if there is a room available at that time to book on points. Of course it doesn't prevent you from booking a cash room for backup in case a point room isn't available but I don't think there will be many of the DVC villas available for cash once it's sold out because of the small number of total rooms so the hotel portion may be your only option for cash. You would have to change rooms during your stay.

Banking and borrowing with your 50 points will be the best strategy and if you're looking at a studio will get you several nights in the low seasons.

has anyone reported how close to sold out VGC actually is!? I would love a 50 point add on, but I just bought 125 at BLT in July...

We just bought VGC in July while we were in CA. The rep told us if they continue on the same path they are, they will be sold out by Feb. I do not know how much I believe that, but it was what she told us.

I hope that helps

just in time for Hawaii to start selling...:rolleyes1

My question is, are you sure you can get a different UY with the purchase of only 50 points?

In order to get a new UY with VGC, you would need to purchase the required minimum for a new contract unless this is a new promo DVC is offering.

I have 2 UY's and had to purchase 160 point Master contracts for each.

Also, the 1-Transfer per UY rule applies even if you transfer to yourself. BLT points are high, so 160 is not gonna go very far there, especially if you want a 1 bed or larger. OTOH, with only 50 points at VGC and its ultra small size, do you really want to fight all the other owners for those 50 rooms with only 50 points? You would be a Fri or Sat night away from a lockout at busy times.

I wish I could do an add-on for VGC! I also think that once the DCA expansion is done VGC is going to be a very hot ticket. Add in F&W in DCA and it is just about perfect.

I'll be there for 2 nights in a studio for my birthday in February. DH is having a cow at the 42 points that is costing! If I could I'd get a 100 point add on. That would be enough for us. I was hoping there would be great incentives while we are on our cruise in November.

But, given the new "incentives"- ain't gonna happen anytime soon. :sad2:

Add in the new animatronic dragon, in Fantazmic that debuted this week, Big Thunder BBQ (lots of fun), and the rumor of a Tomorrowland redo/ updating. Pool cabanas etc. There will be a lot of reasons for owning at VGC.
