Actor Fred Thompson Considers 2008 Run

WASHINGTON - Fred Thompson thinks there isn't enough "star" power in the GOP presidential field, so the professional actor and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race.

Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama "Law & Order," said Sunday that he's going to "leave the door open" and make a decision in the coming months.

"I'm going to wait and see what happens," Thompson said. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November."

"I think people are somewhat disillusioned. A lot of people are cynical out there. They're looking for something different," he said.

Thompson, 64, said he was pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible GOP candidacy, citing his conservative credentials.

On the issues, Thompson said he:

_Is "pro-life," and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as "bad law and bad medical science."

_Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. "Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn't be allowed to change that."

_Opposes gun control, and praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says."

_Supports President Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq. "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now," he said. "We've got to give it a chance to work."

_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted.

Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements."

Thompson said he was not setting a deadline to make a decision and believes he won't be at a disadvantage if he waited until summer. "The lay of the land will be different in a couple of months than it is today, one way or another," he said.

Thompson, the minority counsel in the Watergate investigation, was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill the unexpired term of Vice President Al Gore. He was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and left the Senate in 2003 to resume his acting career.

Thompson has acted in films such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Cape Fear," and "In the Line of Fire." He was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Based on the CURRENT people running, he would be my first choice, with Rudy a close second. Yeah, I know they're no where near similar politically, I think outside of Sen. Thompson, Rudy has the best chance of beating wither Obama or Clinton. I'm much more aligned with Thompson, though. I think, overall, Rudy has the best chance of winning, I think Sen. Thompson would likely have a better chance of winning compared to the rest of the pack. Perhaps McCain, but I really can't stand him. He's in it for himself - pure ego, not because he thinks he can do better.

Be interesting to see how far this goes. A majority of Americans

1) Don't want to see Roe overturned
2) Don't want more troops sent to Iraq
3) Do like Law and Order

LOL...I like him on Law and Order and I like him from interviews ive seen.
I disagree with him politically on just about everything.
What does opposes gun control mean? I believe in the right to bear arms, but I do think there should be limitations..Is he in favor of guns to anyone at any time?

Interesting statistics. Where did they come from?

I'd ONLY even think of considering him IF Mariska Hargity is his VP pick!

Otherwise No!

I hope he gets in the race. Gives me another good choice.

I thought I heard him being interviewed on TV this morning. I'd listen to what he has to say before scratching him off the list.

:rotfl2: I have never even seen it, so I have no opinion about that!

What!!! It's probably the most syndicated show on TV today. It's got more flavors that Baskin Robbins. It's on like 16 channels and 142 times a week!! How could you possibly miss seeing it!?!?!

If we are going to pick our presidential candidates from the multitude of Law and Order actors, my vote goes for Christopher Meloni.

Even if I didn't agree with him politically (have no idea where he stands), at least I could drool while disagreeing:happytv:

Has nothing to do with that. I didn't even know he was. Read about some of the stuff that goes on in his life.

His best role was the big bug in MIB II.
