I have one coming up, and I have several things planned, but I was thinking maybe you folks might have some "new" or "different" ideas.

So, do you?

The party is 2 hours long. I have lots of dances and giveaways. And I have a contest or two planned.

EDIT: The lady throwing the party wanted to know if boys and girls would dance together. I had to tell her I honestly do know know. In fact, I am not sure it is even a good idea to try to get them to at that age. What do you think?

Also, I am planning a parent - child dance, but am not sure THAT is a good idea. I mean, what if a parent WOULDN"T dance with their child. I imagine the child would feel awful.

This event is being held at a daycare facility. at the end of the day on a Friday.

Wow, I can't imagine hiring a DJ for a 5yo's birthday party! :rotfl:

Our school has a sock hop every year, and all ages enjoy it, including the kindergarteners and the younger siblings. They do all the typical songs, including YMCA, Chicken Dance, etc. Things that most of the kids enjoy. I would skip the parent/child dance, but instead encourage the adults to participate in the other songs. The plus side to that is that you then have adults helping with the various dances.

I agree.. What are they going to do when the kid turns 16? Fly in the latest "top notch" performers from L.A.??

Me either, but if they want to hire me, then I am going to do it.

I'm actually bringing ( and paying ) a 12 year old girl with 7 years of dance class along to help with this. She knows ALL the favorite dances.

These people have lost their minds :sad2:

Okay, I guess you can do the Hokey Pokey and the Macarena and maybe the bunny hop--that ought to fill up 15 minutes.

5yo boys do not dance with girls--ever :confused3 The boys hit the other boys and the girls giggle and shriek. A few will dance, but most will chase each other. What ever happened to ice cream and cupcakes? :confused3

Yet another attempt to encourage children to grow up and act like teenagers when they aren't even out of Kindergarten yet..

Why can't kids be allowed to be "kids"? :confused3

I agree with everything you have said.

My best bit of advice is to keep everything simple and SHORT. And expect the unexpected.

Are you expected to take care of the music or be THE entertainment and organize things to keep them busy? If the latter is true, I hope you are charging big bucks.

That is nuts.

I agree. It's ridiculous and excessive. IMO, it's ridiculous and excessive even for teens...then again, I am sort of old fashioned that way.

A birthday party...not a royal event.

Hey, I don't blame you! :rotfl: Whatever floats their boat.

We do hire a DJ for our kids Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, but compared to most people, those events are simple (party at our house, etc). What do people have to look forward to when they get married if 5yo birthday parties are such a big deal (and I have been known to go a bit overboard with kid parties)?

A little bit of both. And, I am probably not charging nearly enough! :teeth: Certainly not what I get for doing weddings. But it is only two hours, and the lady already knows that it is on a Friday night, meaning that people may leave early. It is scheduled from 6PM to 8PM.

BTW, I have one scheduled for another youngster --- or at least that is the reason being given --- and THAT ONE IS CRAZY. 125+ people at a catering hall. Full dinner. DJ, Clown, Videographer, and "characters".....

I estimate the cost of that one at 10K+.

I "am" getting full wedding DJ rates for that one, as I will be doing everything I do at a wedding, on a Saturday afternoon.

See, now I see a Bar/Bat Mitzvah as a totally different kind of event. Much more involved, more poeple invited, etc. Like a wedding. (I'm not even Jewish, but it is a whole different celebration, IMO)

Papa Duece - Can you pick up some hula hoops and do a hula hoop contest? Don't know if any of the kids can do a hula hoop, but it might be fun trying, and sure would make some great videos!

When my DD was in elementary school, one of the favorite songs was "Who Let the Dogs Out"

My daughters will be 5 in early June. They love hoola hoops, for like 5 seconds. Maybe mine are not yet coordinated enough, but they can't seem to get the hang of it.

Props would be good to get the kids moving.:thumbsup2 How about jump ropes, beach balls, parachute thing would be fun if you have the room.
What about duck, duck goose songs or something along those lines, you know?
Of course you will have the Chicken Dance, the choo-choo, and the hokey pokey right?

Please find a copy of Chubby Checker's "Limbo Rock" and be part of teaching these little folks to limbo!!!!

Even get a copy of "Shout" from the Animal House soundtrack and get to do the "little bit softer now" if you can...

The cool latest dances, phshaw. Teach them some traditional stuff!

Musical chairs? I dont know it is down right insane to have a party like that for a 5 year old. And people wonder what is wrong with kids these days!! I dread to think what they are gonna be like 10 years from now! :scared1: When mommy and daddy keeps shoveling money hand over fist for exhorbitant parties gifts what ever!

Eh.... I know what I am charging. And there is pizza and cake. That is it. Whole party is probably less than $400. I posted a poll here a while ago about the price fo kids parties..... According to the responses I got, Anything under $500 is relatively acceptable based on the poll.

the link is NOT the party I have mentioned in the OP of this thread.

OK, back on point. :) Any cool ideas? :teeth:

Make sure you have the new and hip Disney channel songs--yes at 5 years old, girls know them...

This would be Hannah Montana songs, High School Musical songs, maybe some Hillary Duff (she's passe now), Kelly Clarkson and such. Not exactly Disney channel, but at 5 my son went to a similiar party at an elementary school... and the Spongebob theme was requested a million times. These 5-6 year olds were singing the theme at the time of their lungs!

You could do a sing a long or a guess the TV show contest.

They wont know dances like alley cat or things like that, but the cha cha slide is funny.
