Active Posting vs Active Lurking

Pretty lousy way to mis-characterize people who come to this site to research or gain insight from people in the know aboout all things Disney.

Happy Thanksgiving.

No mis-characterization at all. You either post or don't. If you don't, no one knows you.

The real success of any discussion website is created by those that contribute to the discussion. Those that read the discussions are welcome and valuable (possibly even using the products and/or services of advertisers), but those that actually contribute to the discussions are priceless.

I completely agree. I am not someone who posts a lot, so I am not as active and essential a part of the DISboard community as some are. The thought that someone who posts frequently is a more valuable member than I does not offend me in the least. I've never noticed any ill will towards those who rarely post or only lurk, but I would not call those members (including myself much of the time) an active member of the community.

I lurk all the time on lots of boards. Usually I'm just curious or looking for information. I don't contribute because I don't know much to contribute.

I'm a lurker and proud of it. The few times I have posted a comment, I have been run over by a steam roller. Basically I am a shy person. I am also non confrontational. If I read something I don't agree with, or if someone disagrees with what I write, I don't answer back. If I can help with an answer to a question, I will reply. I love reading trip reports. It makes up for not being at WDW. I HATE when trip reports are hijacked by readers who post little comments through out which the OP feels like they have to answer every comment with a comment. This is when trip reports go on for ever, or don't get finished. Comments that I feel are inane such as " sorry you got a hangnail before your trip, I hope it didn't slow you down". I would encourage writers to continue with trip reports, to finish them even if there aren't a lot of posts. There are a lot of lurkers reading them. We just don't want to slow them down by signing on because then the writer feels like they have to acknowledge every post. Then there are people who just post to see their post count go up. Is there a prize for having the most posts? I'm not going to rent or trade my DVC points, so I don't care how many points I have.

I come to the DIS a couple of times a week and have been doing so for several years - but I don't post very often. Most of the time, what I was going to say was said before me by several other members...I love all the info on these boards!

Its really not hard to post once in a while. Spend some time on the restuarant board where everyone has an opinion to share about whether or not Le Cellier is worth the bother and add your voice to the lack of concensus. Pop into a thread on the "best pool at DVC" to point out that SAB looks really cool, but you love the SSR pool for the toddler slide and the easy ability to watch your kids. Perhaps someone has already stated your opinion on the quality of food at Sci Fi, but you have to point out that regardless of the food quality, sitting in the air conditioned darkness drinking malts and watching cheesy trailers manages to make it onto your kids "must do" list each year. Pop onto the parent board, every few days someone else is asking when your kids stopped needing strollers (and trust me, even Deb and Bill can't answer when your kids last needed a stroller). The budget board at this time of year is filled with finds and specials - walk through Target and discover a particularly good deal - post it.

The threads everyone can answer - even if your answer has already been given:

Most restaurant threads of the "what is your favorite...." nature. Best character meal, most romantic, where to eat a signature meal?
Best pool?
What do you do on arrival day?
Has DVC been worth it for your family?
How do you handle guests with DVC?
Do you cook in your room?
etc.

The info is only here because people post. And because we disagree so often, really only the fact based threads can be dismissed as "someone has already said it." (Can I upgrade last years non-expiring ticket to a hopper?) The Disboards works a lot like British parlament. There is a lot of noise and shouting - eventually a thread peters out. Some people have had their minds changed, and the OP has had their question answered by a variety of opinions that they can weigh. For all the stuff that is opinion - and most of it here is - the more voices being added to the opinion helps add to the info. Even if you are simply stating - yet again - that Le Cellier has the best steak on property (and, of course, you'd be wrong, but I'll let it go this time).

Nicely put, Crisi.

And your kids doesn't need a stroller anymore once he/she can drive a car. ;)

I don't post often, but I use this forum as an informational site. I have posted before to share an incident and outcome that hopefully helps someone else. I have also asked for help or opinion to give me insight on things Disney. I would like to thank the people that have helped me on this site. I never considered myself a blogger, but will try to participate more, not to use the R/T board, but as a way to say thanks and keep this site going.

I don't post everyday but I definitely visit the boards everyday and read.

Always send friends planning Disney trips to these boards for the great information and I'm sure they lurk more than they post.

Jen
