I am supposed to be leaving Atlanta at 2pm tomorrow to drive 4hrs south to Valdosta. DD16 & I have a college visit on Saturday. At least, we DID. We're expecting 2-4" of snow here beginning around noon and more snow *south* of Atlanta. There saying 6-8 HOURS of steady snowfall. And DH had planned to drive down to the Florida panhandle to visit is aged mother. But south Alabama is expecting 3-5" of snow! NO WAY are we driving through that stuff, especially on the back roads of Alabama.

Good thing I already have milk, bread and cookie dough.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I know, you are not used to it at all but honestly a few inches of snow isn't a big deal. Slow down a little, start stopping for intersections a little sooner and you will be fine. Now, if there is ICE under that snow, no way would I go but snow itself isn't really all that slippery.

Golfgal, when I first moved to Atlanta from Chicago I laughed at the panic over an inch or two of snow. I learned, however, that it is much safer to remain at home to stay away from the panicked drivers. It would be much safer driving through Minnesota in a blizzard where people know how to drive in such weather. :thumbsup2

The grocery store was already out of bread, milk and the cheap brands of beer (still had the flavored and imported beer) this morning. :lmao: Is there some recipe that everyone makes with bread, milk and beer when the weather is bad?:confused3

I know, I still think it is funny. My Dad grew up in northern MN and now lives in Missouri. They got 4" of snow and everything is shut down. Shortly after they moved there several years ago he was driving to work and they had closed the road he took. They had a couple police cars there blocking things and he asked the police why the road was closed. The police man told him it was because of the snow, all 3" of it. My dad showed him is then MN driver's license and the policeman laughed and let him go through the barricade.

You know, if I only had to drive an hour or so I would have done it. I have a Jeep Wrangler 4x4. But it's 5 hours driving through falling snow on roads populated by other drivers who don't know how to drive in snow. The temp is hovering just above freezing so I expect ICE is going to be our bigger problem.

Oh, there's ice all right. And it's illegal to drive on the roads if they are closed (which if there's more than an inch, they will be. Because all the overpasses and bridges will be solid ice).

My kids went out to play in the snow for maybe 15 minutes, and when they came, in they were totally soaked, like they'd been out in the rain. I mean their hair looked like they'd just stepped out of the shower. The snow is so WET.

It's pretty though. :) I haven't seen it snow this hard since 1993!

French toast goes great with beer. Don't ask! We just had the empty grocery store shelves here ourselves. :rotfl:

This is PERFECT snowman making snow. :thumbsup2

I had to pick DD at noon from school today as school closed early. We're not due to get anything until 7pm tonight. It's the first time I've ever seen a snow day or partial snow day because it will snow that night. The only thing I can think is that it has to do with busing? :confused3

I also swung by the grocery store this morning and it was INSANE. I've never waited that long to check out at Publix, some people had two carts! We don't have any plans this weekend, think I'll stay at home and avoid all the crazy drivers! :rolleyes1

Snow just started here. It's real snow not just the flurries we usually get. DS14 is going to spend the night with a friend. I told the mom that my son may be her weekend guest if I can't pick him up.;)

Yeah, I went to Publix at 9:30, right after they picked up Christian. We just got word that they will be sending all the kids home an hour early. Not surprised really. Here in Cobb County we have hundreds of thousands of kids riding buses. The last buses run about 4:15pm. Nobody wants them carrying kids home in Friday afternoon rush hour traffic with snow falling. our bus drivers don't train in snow and unless they drove buses up in New York or someplace, they've probably never driven a bus in snow at all. I am most happy to have the kids out early rather than take chances with children in the snow, ice, dark and cold.

There's lots of snow here in Montgomery! The most I've seen since I was 5. We were supposed to go to Savannah this weekend for Valentine's Day (about a 6 hour drive). We decided to skip it because I'm not used to driving in the conditions, and seriously, how much fun can Savannah be when it's snowing?! :) Luckily our hotel was REALLY accommodating and gave us our money back.

Dangit! how bad is it right now (3pm) in Atlanta and how long is it supposed to last??? My aunt and cousins were supposed to come visit me this weekend and they had planned to leave tonight after work. They are saying it's bad right now and they may have to cancel!

Ok, I lied. Bad Weather.com It's snowing here and DD is over the moon. She doesn't remember ever seeing snow before so she's been out running around the lawn trying to catch snowflakes on her tongue. My dogs are very confused, they're not sure what this white stuff is but they're sure they don't like it. :rotfl:

Jen... the snow started here just before 2pm and it's the heavy wet kind. It stuck to the grass and trees almost immediately. The roads are wet but not slippery yet. The wet pavement is expected to turn icy later. 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected in Atlanta, with the area south of the city getting more.

FYI, for those who don't realize it, Valdosta is only 15 minutes north of Florida! You get south of Atlanta, and those areas NEVER get snow. I'm 39 years old (South Georgia girl) and I've only seen it snow down there once and that was the blizzard of '93. So, that said, they don't have ANY equipment to deal with the snow that far south.
To the OP, I personally think you would be fine, but if you have any doubts, I say don't. I now live in the mountains of NC where we get a good amount of snow. The people who have problems driving are the ones who get scared and panic. They usually end up in a ditch. Also, OP, my parents went to VSU (back when it was a college, not a university), as well as my in-laws. I then went there in high school for Georgia's Governor's Honors Program. DH and I lived in Valdosta right after we got married. The campus is SO beautiful, and it is a good, smaller public school.

Thanks for the positive feedback. DDs Drama teacher went there and he is really recommending VSU for her (she wants to be a fine arts major.) This is the second time we have tried to go down there and had to cancel. If it wasn't going to snow until later tonight I wouldn't have felt uneasy about driving down there. But Atlanta is going crazy and I'd have to first drive through Atlanta in Friday rush hour traffic and then drive another 4 hours on slick roads to get there. Oh, and my right foot in injured. I have to take my walking boot off to drive, but it might be iffy on such a long drive. I had planned to have DD16 do some of the driving, but I'm not confident in her abilities to drive in snow. She doesn't have that much experience to start with.

Still coming down out there. We have a good 1"+ in our yard. The road looks wet but not icy--yet. Tonight it's going down in the 20s and I wouldn't want to be out in it after dark.
