Ack! Animator's Palate knife on eBay!!!

I don't think offering the items for sale will have any effect. People have such a sense of entitlement that if they want something, they're just going to steal it, not pay for it. Disney does just need to start charging people I suppose, which is ridiculous that it has to come to that.

For the most part, I think you're right. People who are willing to steal items will steal even if they are offered for sale. However, for the rest of us (who like the items but would not steal), it would be nice if you could purchase.

Actually they did this with the new cloth laundry bags that are in the closet on the Dream. They are embroidered with the DCL logo. There is a note to the effect that it is supposed to stay on the ship but if you love it that much you can take it home but you will be charged $5.00. They should do that with the red pillows!!!

MJ

I probably would buy one for $5.00....depends on the size I guess, we don't have laundry facilities in our apartment, so that would be cool.

Then people wonder why prices increase so much - all of us have to pay for these people stealing the items. I am sure many more went missing that we never heard of or see on ebay.

When I stayed at the Four Season in Maui they had a beach back in the closet for our use. The note on it said that we were able to use it during our stay as often as we wanted. If we were to take it with us to bring back home our room account would be charged $45 for the bag.

For a CM to sell anything they obtained as a result of being a CM (whether it's complimentary tickets or merchandise they purchased at a discount) is felony fraud.

Unfortunately it isn't that simple. If the employee did purchase the item, legally speaking it belongs to them. So if they have indeed been told that they shouldn't sell it on, that is only breaking company policy. As far as I am aware - there is no law against it.

I have a lots of unique items that I gained legally - either purchased, given to me or won. I was never told about these rules at any stage and therefore would assume that I would be able to sell them (I won't, because I like them). So I suppose proof of these rules and the understanding that one is bound by them is the difficult thing to prove.

I do feel sorry for the person who was selling this item. If he did buy it, and was under the impression she could sell it and wasn't permitted to - she will be fired because of the complaints. Unfortunately, Disney isn't the most compassionate of employers.

I would rather they charged who ever takes the stuff because ultimatly we are ALL being charged for it.

I agree, the room is not a mini-bar, but for some reason a lot of guests treat it as such, so make them pay out the nose like they do from a mini-bar! I have, many times, checked into "special" rooms at hotels only to find the special touches are gone because a prvious guest decided it would look good in their home :sad2:

Not in this case. I had some contact with the seller, and she/he had said they bought it at a CM-only store, and proceeded to tell me the "rules" (according to her/him) about what can and cannot be sold. I found out later from a CM friend that the "rules" the seller quoted to me were not correct, and that the butter knife would not even be sold in the CM store until after it had been on the ship (or sold at a Disney Store) for a minimum of 6 months. AND the seller just got off the MV. I think it adds up.:teacher:

Oh cry me a river!

Oh no, this is just as bad as these icons: :charac2: popcorn::
:rotfl:

My favorite thing I've gotten off the ship were the DCL pens and the matches. And of course all my saved dinner tickets and navigators.

I won't let anyone use my DCL pens :wizard: My most treasured is my fish extender gifts ;)

It is disgusting. I spoke with my travel agent on the phone recently, Her boss was on the Maiden voyage and she was on the next one. Between them they say knives and menus being stolen, knobs from dressers being removed and stolen, and even floor tile pryed up from the elevator floor and taken:scared1: I honestly cannot undersatnd how anyone can act this way:sad2: I really wish DCL would go after such people--including removing them from the cruise when caught and not letting them sail again. If it stops being profitable, idiots will stop doing it and the rest of us can enjoy our cruises.
omg.
knobs and tiles? SERIOUSLY???
I totally agree with what you wish.

Just sitting here waiting for the 1st post from someone saying DCL costs so much its ok to take things from the ships.:confused3

A thief is a thief, plain and simple!

AKK
True!

This does not surprise me at all. When I saw them in photos my first thought was those are going to grow legs.

They are really neat and if they were offered for sale they would probably loose less and could make up some of the cost of losses. Like the pillows which I would imagine have been walking away as well. I know I would buy both.

From what I have read online Disney tends to not charge people for missing items. I hear stories about those iHome radio's often walking away and no one ever being charged.
They will sell some things- if you ask. I asked about the memory foam pillow (because it was the first pillow I EVER loved, instead of just tolerating- ever, even at home LOL) and they sold me two- boxed and everything.
And they do charge things missing from the room. I remember one cruise where I was charged the next day for the slippers in our room- I called and told them we'd put them in the bottom drawer in the closet because I was setting luggage and bags of stuff in there and didn't want them under stuff. They called me back and said they found them and refunded the charge. :rotfl:
IDK how they'd charge for things like knifes and tiles taken from public areas though. they wouldn't know who to charge! And the thieves know that. :(

I, too, am REALLY disappointed that by the time I cruise on the Dream (in late Sept), all of these neat little items will either have been stolen or DCL will stop using them in order to stop the thievery.

I know that people may have the attitude that they paid plenty for their cruise, and that they're only taking "one little thing".....but when that many people are of the same mind, it adds up.

Rude, inconsiderate, and ILLEGAL.
I agree! Absolutely agree.

This is just sad! :( I read some of these posts to my family and DD10 said that it is going to be those stupid people's fault that she doesn't get to see one of those cute knives when we go on the Fantasy next year. There has to be something DCL can do to stop people from taking these and other things. They could put a chip inside of the pillows at least. Wouldn't that surprise a few thieves? The worst thing is that DCL put a lot of time and money into taking care of these kinds of details to make our cruising experience special and in a very short time relatively few people are going to deny the majority of guests from enjoying that experience.
I agree. And it's sad. :(

Castmembers are not allowed to resell items at a price higher than they paid if purchased with a castmember discount. And are not allowed to sell items received as a gift from the company at any price while employed by the company. Do they always enforce this policy: No. Can they? Yes, it could mean immediate termination for any castmember breaking the policy. I wouldn't put my job on the line to sell a few pieces of stuff.

For a CM to sell anything they obtained as a result of being a CM (whether it's complimentary tickets or merchandise they purchased at a discount) is felony fraud.

Please post the reference to the specific statute that shows this.

People throw the word felony around like they actually understand its meaning.

I think they should be a notice in the rooms and on the dining room tables that if guests should like to take an item home their onboard account will be automatically charged for that amount

Hotels have this on many items in their rooms, not at Disney but I have seen it at others. On their robes, beach bags that are there for your use during your stay, etc
I agree with this EXCEPT, what do you do when you have multiple families dining at the same table in the restaurants and a knife or plate comes up missing? Charge each family at the table? Charge each family for a portion of the missing item(s)? I really think that things taken outside of a person's stateroom is VERY VERY difficult to bill for unless it is specifically found on that person or that person's belongings. Tough situation...

...and don't forget the lovely passengers who think the pictures at Shutters are free!! Saw a man grab his stack and run up the back stairs. Nice! :sad2:
WOW!!! I just don't know what else to say!!!! :scared1:

I took one of them by accident on the magic in october, I was mortified, dh was looking for a bag the last day, I told him to use the laundry bag, When I got home I said "whats this?" he said its the laundry bag, you told me to use it:scared1::scared1::scared1:
I thought it was the old plastic type, I swear......... If I told him to jump of a bridge he would do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL!!! While I understand your being mortified, this was what appeared to be completely an honest mistake and not an outright theft. there is a difference.... :goodvibes

I believe in KARMA. What you do, good or bad, comes back to you. When we first sat down and saw the butter knives at AP we all said, "Well, these won't be here long!" I would buy a set in a minute. I will never steal one.

I'd love to have the red pillow on my bed but I have a conscience and it would be like the Tale Tell Heart every time I looked at it. It would scream STOLEN each time I saw it!

Has anyone contacted DCL and given them the link? I know companies who will bid for a stolen item and when they win the auction they pay the seller, get the item back, including the seller's information, then press charges

Felony fraud as in jail time. I checked again and felony fraud is not used in reference to merchandise, but it is used in reference to selling any tickets or "gate entrance" obtained from the company.

As for merchandise, you may not profit from the sale of merchandise purchased at a discount or given to you by the company.

I am not going to post the reference because that is inappropriate on a public forum. However if one is a Cast Member, this information is easy to find.

Whether it is always enforced is another matter. I know people who have broken the rule and nothing has happened to them. I also know people who did not break the rule, but someone found their behavior "suspicious" and they were penalized without the chance to prove they were in the right.

The point as it relates to the OP is, there is not a chance that a Cast Member could have purchased this butter knife and be able to sell it on Ebay without breaking a rule. The butter knives are not for sale to the general public, so purchasing it in the first place would be merchandise obtained as a result of being employed by the Walt Disney Company. However I doubt that it would have been purchased, as usually merchandise available to CMs is not first-run. More likely it was stolen, either by a CM or by a guest.

This made me laugh remembering something that a friend told me about a cruise we took with them. Their DH didn't really look into anything regarding the cruise, just went and enjoyed them. Their second cruise I guess he had more time and was wandering around the ship and Shutters was open. He saw some of their pictures there. She went to the room later and found them on the desk and asked him where the folder was they came in, she had to photo package card not him so how? It turned out he thought that he could take them back to the room so that they could decide if they wanted any of them. He definitely wasn't running out of there but no CM said anything to him so he had no idea how the system worked. She took the pictures back and explained what had happened. :rotfl:

When I was on the maiden voyage I went to a seminar as part of the platinum castaway club perks. We were told that Disney Cruise line is in the process of putting together items for sale. It is on the same idea as the booklets in the room at the Disney World resorts. Where you can buy the bed linens and other items. They could be shipped home. Hopefully this will come soon so people who want the items can buy them directly from Disney Cruise line and not from Ebay.

I hope that if they do this, that it's the actual items from the ship and not items "inspired" by the ship such as what WDW does in their "resort collection" catalog. I wanted to buy the same pillow that is used in the resorts at WDW, but found out that the resort collection pillows are not the actual pillows from WDW. Through some research on the DIS, I found another retailer selling the same pillows that WDW purchases for their rooms. I could see DCL selling things that are similar, but not exactly the same as what you see on-board. I'm still waiting for them to design a nightstand lamp similar to the ones on-board.
