Ace of Cakes/ Cake boss cost

I'm not sure I'd want to eat a cake from either bakery; as others have said far too many hands working on them. Besides, no one ever wears hair coverings or coverings for facial hair. Ewwwwwwwwwwww!!

Yet when the Foodnetwork has a program about how some items are made, all the workers in the area have proper head/face coverings & most even have gloves on.

I also agree that local bakeries should be able to make a cake for any event. Hmmmmmmmmm--make a cake yourself? Might not be that picture perfect, but made with love...

I had a piece of cake for Ace of Cakes at a birthday party. Beautiful cake ( cake was a replica of the persons favorite car but honestly it tasted blah.

My niece just had a cake made from Cake Boss for a big huge 13th birthday party blowout. Long story, but her godfather works in Jersey and somehow knows someone from Carlos so he is always bringing home the crumb cake, etc. Anyway they wanted that to be their gift to her, so they had a cake made that matched the cake on the invitation.

It looked gorgeous! But, it wasn't a very big cake, and it definitly was not enough to feed the other jr. high school kids and the family that was there. I do know that her godfather told her they would have charged $3000 for the cake if they were charging him.:scared1:

It was gorgeous, and it was delicious! But I always get all my birthday cakes from Costco and to be honest the costco cakes get the same type of rave reviews. People were excited to eat a cake boss cake so it was a novelty, but when all was said and done (20 minutes later) it was GONE! So its really up to you....if you want the WOW factor of a cake boss or ace of cakes cake....go for it....you don't have to justify it to anyone. But if you're not sure......I think it definitly did not live up to its hype!

I can see paying those prices for a wedding cake maybe. Otherwise you are just helping people cash in on their luck getting on food network.

There are many talented bakers who will make you anything you want for much less and probably would appreciate the work much more.

One thing to remember on those shows the cakes are not baked fresh. They are frozen.

They order them frozen or they bake them and freeze them? My friend is a baker, she bakes the cakes then freezes them, she said it is easier to frost and put fondant on that way. They always taste yummy too!

We are getting this one for my sister's shower for $180 from a local person. The bakeries would have charged a fortune and Cake Boss was probably at least $20 per serving, if not more

*respectfully snipped*
As much as I like the people on the show, the decorating area always looks so dirty. And the cakes seem touched by a thousand hands. Total turn off to me.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Watching all those gloveless hands handling the cakes and fondant is so gross to me on these shows. Yuck! I would never buy a cake like that, nor would I eat one. I feel the same way about Cold Stone ice cream. I don't want to eat ice cream that has been slopped around on another surface. Ick!

OP, I'm sorry. I did nothing to help this discussion. If I were you, I would go for taste rather than looks, in a cake, and I bet you could find a local bakery that would whip up a very tasty confection and save you a lot of money. Find out what flavors your finance likes... chocolate, strawberries, etc, and build on that.

Hello disers!

My fiance is turning 30 in June, and I'd love to get him a custom cake by the "cake boss" guy from TLC. I'm only about an hour and a half away from there, so it would be pretty easy to do.. but does anyone have any experience with ordering this type of custom cake? How much does it cost? Any help you can give would be appreciated! I don't even know where to start!

My friends husband & his sister do cakes.

My friend lives in Durham & her SIL lives in Meriden so they are close to you, well closer then NJ.

I don't know how much their cakes cost as I never bought one but I am sure it is a cheaper alternative then the Cake Boss.

They are on vacation right now so I don't know if they would get back to you this week if you were to email them.

This link is to a site that focuses humorously on messed up professional cakes, but on Sunday they post beautifully made/ decorated cakes from local bakeries. Jenn ( the writer) would probably be able to hook you up with a very talented decorator. She always says where the cakes are from.

I was born and raised in Hoboken, NJ and while I LOVE the crumb cake and pastries from Carlos Bakery I will never pay $$$ for a cake from him. I agree too many hands on the cakes...I will also never wait 1 hour just to get in the place. Over the christmas school break the line was out the door, down the block and around the corner.

OMG I looove cakewrecks. The "Sunday Sweets" are the most awesome cakes. I think contacting Jenn would be a great idea!

I ADORE this site. Jen is hilarious. Even had to go out and get the book to pass around to my not so broadband connected family members (who are big bakers).

This whole thread reminds me of Steve Martins retort in "Father of the Bride" when he hears the quote for the wedding cake;

"Franck, a cake is just water and flour".

I always get a chuckle when I think of that. LOL

Wow!!! $1000.00 for a cake??? After shelling out that much money for a cake, then having to cut into it....I think I'd probably pass out :faint:

It amazes me how much these cakes can cost! Even if I HAD the money, I would never spend it on something that only lasts for such a short period of time. Not to mention all the calories!! ;)

One thing to remember on those shows the cakes are not baked fresh. They are frozen.

No biggie. Our fabulous baker gave us the opportunity to taste the difference between not frozen and frozen. Frozen tasted better!

See, when we first met with her, she had pulled some frozen cake slices out, put the correct filling/frosting on, and let us take them away with us. We needed a retaste on one b/c either I just didn't like the combo or there was something wrong (I got sick after eating it), and she gave us a fresh piece of cake. Fresh was missing...something...moistness, flavor richness, something.

So I'm cool with freezing the cake to be pulled out later and finished up. I bet that quite a few, to most, bakeries do this.

My dd 9 LOVES watching Cake Boss and has asked for a cake like that for her bday this year. I'm going to get her a two tier whimsical decorated one from a local place. $1000-OMG!

DH got me a Cake Boss cake for my fortieth last year. It was a 14x14 inch square that was about 7 inches high, just that tier with no specialty shape, with modeling chocolate/rice krispie treat items on top (a pile of vegetables) and I know it was over 600$.

Hope this helps.
