Hello disers!

My fiance is turning 30 in June, and I'd love to get him a custom cake by the "cake boss" guy from TLC. I'm only about an hour and a half away from there, so it would be pretty easy to do.. but does anyone have any experience with ordering this type of custom cake? How much does it cost? Any help you can give would be appreciated! I don't even know where to start!

I don't know anything about Cake Boss, but I know that Ace of Cakes has a waiting list more than a year long and cakes start at a minimum of $500 (see their website). I would expect Cake Boss to be similar.

I think Ace of Cakes might have a minimum of $1000 now. Love Chef Duff and we live nearby, but couldn't afford that - my daughter (she's 8) wanted one for her birthday last year!

Instead, she got a Charm City Cakes apron and a little mini-Duff figurine!

Charm City minimum is $1000, and I've heard from people that live in the area that the Cake Boss is about the same for a custom cake.

You can probably find a local baker that will make something comparable for a fraction of the price. My friend got a small cake from Carlos and it was $$$.

I love to watch Ace of Cakes - and I cannot imagine how much those cakes cost. $1000 is the minimum and I doubt they show the "basic $1000" cake on the shows.

Now Cake Boss....I don't like. Too much yelling and I just don't think their cakes are quite up to par of Ace of Cakes.

I'd guess a local baker could make a great cake for much less than $1000!

As much as I love cake and the cakes that both of the shows so, there is NO WAY I would pay that much for a cake. :scared1:

You might be pleasantly surprised at what you can find locally if you look! I know it's not cake, but check out the nifty (and yummy!) cookies made not far from where I live (in Central NY):

Just heard about this place today, and will be looking into ordering cookies as party favors for my kids birthday parties this year! They are just too cute. I had an ice cream cone cookie today and my kids had the cupcake cookies and they were adorable and totally delicious! (And one could hope calorie-free, but I don't think so :rotfl:).

So look locally and see if you can find someone who does nice work that way - unless you have money to burn...this being the budget board and all, saving money is a big fave of mine. :)

I really enjoy Ace of Cakes, but hate Cake Boss. Too much Jersey Shore for me. lol

I would never spend that much on a cake. The most important thing about a cake is it's taste. I doubt Duff's cakes are anything to rave about. As much as I like the people on the show, the decorating area always looks so dirty. And the cakes seem touched by a thousand hands. Total turn off to me.

I, personally, would rather get a cake from a place that focuses on taste, not cutesie tricks and that sort of thing. Halloweenqueen's reasons are the same as my own (whereas my DH and DS, who are the ones that torment me with that show, would love one of their cakes).

However, if you look here, you can see the dates that they are booked up. Looks like, if June 2-13 is when you need it, they still have openings then. Handy dandy and INFORMATIVE website, even if I would never even want to taste one of their cakes!

Oh wow, I looked at the Cake Boss site...this wouldn't apply to a birthday cake, but..."Any specialty cake is priced per person; basic butter cream cakes start at $8.00 per person and go up from there."

And people thought our 3.50/slice (generous, huge slices, too) buttercream cake was expensive! (and if you lived in Oregon I'd give you our baker's name, b/c it was possibly the best cake ever made...the husband of a friend of mine was having actual dreams about the cake for a year)

If you read reviews online for Carlos Bakery, most are not that great as far as taste. If presentation is the most important, then this is probably a great place to order a cake. As much as they yell and prolly spit around the food, I wouldn't want to eat anything from there, jmo. I'm sure you can find a local baker than can offer you great taste and a nice looking cake, check on craigslist.

I agree..I'm sure there are alot of bakers that make creative cakes..so same look but less money and you help another small business succeed.

Duff says that for the most part you take off the fondant and decorations and that the cake itself is very tasty..fondant is OK to chew on a few times but after that..ewwww....

There are a lot of great bakeries near you in Milford CT. I'd never drive 90+ minutes to go to Carlo's, just to say I got the cake from the Cake Boss. The prices are outrageous.

Stay close to home and support your local businesses. Ask friends for recommendations, and I bet you'll find someone who will make the perfect cake for you..........and it will taste better and cost less than a cake from Carlo's!

Buddy, the Cake Boss, belongs to our beach club. We usually see him and his various family members there alot. He made cupcakes (with a beach theme - sand, beach umbrellas, flip flops, shells, etc.) for our beach club one summer and they were beautiful!!! They tasted awesome as well, one of the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. Having said that - this was before the show was even on air. Can't comment on quality now, but from just watching the show and how many hands are on those cakes, don't think I'd want to be eating them.:scared: They also did one episode for the beach club's 10th anniversary - that was our club as well. That cake was a little 'busy'.

Not sure of your location, but there is a place in NY/NJ that delivers and makes GREAT cakes

http://www.jacycakes.com

I've had several cakes from them (a beautiful wedding cake and a shower cake) and their work is amazing!

A friend of mine ate the Ace of Cakes cake that was the helicopter in HI and she said it was yummy. Still, I think I'd find a local bakery that would do something similar for a lower price.

OH OH! Do I get to say it first?

(I could go to Disney for a week and stay offsite for the cost of a Cake Boss cake!)

and....

(isn't this the budget board? holy cow!)

:rotfl:
