Accessory recommendations for Nikon D3000?

Hi everyone,
Our oldest son has a Nikon D3000, and is asking fior accessories for it for Christmas. I have no clue where to start (I still use a point and shoot camera), so if anyone has any recommendations at all, I'd love to hear them!

Does he have any accessories already? I'm buying myself a Nikon D5000 next year and have been looking at lenses... If you know whether or not he has any lenses other than the one he got with his camera, I would look into the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens.. It's a very inexpensive lens but very highly favored for the price! It's good for indoor, low-light photos but works really well as a regular every-day lens. I've been reading reviews all weekend and most people say they keep this lens on their cameras 90% of the time. So, if your son doesn't have any lens other than the kit lens, it might be a good upgrade for him that isn't too expensive.

It helps if you know exactly what your son takes photos of? Anything specific, or just more for fun? The reason I'm looking at this lens is because I want to be able to talk clear photos indoors in low-light situations (like at friends' houses or in museums). So it's a good everyday lens.

We live on an island, so he is mostly taking nature/ ocean photos and always gets beautiful sunrise/ sunset pictures.

All he has now is the original lense that came with it, so I'll definitely look into that avenue. Are there any filters or memory cards that would be good?

Tripod!! Got my son one this week and he is loving it. Filters are another good idea.
