Accessible rooms without requesting, does it happen?

I'll be going to a resort (All-Star) in September with my DH, and was wondering if anyone ever was given an accessible room when traveling with 2 people who didn't ask for one. [Just want an idea of the likelihood of getting a king bed versus a couple doubles].

We are fine either way, and would prefer if those who needed the accessible rooms had them . . . I just don't know if availability of them is limited (making them hard to get) or overstocked (making people who didn't request one likely to get one if they are a smaller # of guests).

Absolutely. If they are not booked but the resort is at capacity they are assigned.

It happened to DH at another hotel when he traveled for work. It definitely makes sense to randomly assign them if nobody has requested them, rather than leave them empty.

We were given an accessible room at the BC when our flight was cancelled and we had to stay an extra two days. I loved the roll in shower. And our room had two queen beds. It was a very nice room, actually.

The first time we stayed at Pop (March 2016) we requested a king bed and got it. I didn't realize until later that it was HA. We stayed at Pop again May of this year and again requested and received a king bed but this time it was not an accessible room. But we did ask for the king bed both times.

Accessible rooms are a bookable category for those who need it. Requesting a king bed will not take one away from a person who booked an accessible room. There is not really an overabundance of them at any resort (considering the number of non-accessible rooms) but there are definitely occasions they are not fully booked/needed.

It's happened to me at YC.

I didn't love the roll-in shower, but the room was just steps from the lobby, which was nice as the hallways there get long & winding.

Yes, happened to me at WL on a solo trip. It was fortunate that it did because I came down with the fever and chills flu, and needed those grab rails in the bathroom and the shower seat. So sometimes you get the room you need even if you don't know you're going to need it!

Now that was fortunate!


Alas sometimes it goes the other way. Checked in late to Jambo dvc, ran off to dinner, got back so late. I was a lot heavier and so out of shape and I needed my nightly Epsom bath soaks to be able to walk in the morning.

And it was a roll-in shower only room. No tub. No soaking. And no other rooms to move to until the next day.

While I can't speak to the Disney Resorts, I did work in hotel operations (Front Desk, Night Manager) for over 8 years. I recall exactly one night when we actually needed every one of our accessible rooms. That was once in over 3,000 nights.

If anyone ends up assigned to an accessible room, they shouldn't be concerned that they are taking it from one that really needs it.

Yes, it has happened to us many times. I even had a front desk CM tell me that it was't HA, then when I got there, it was.

Conversely, we have booked an accessible room previously & upon checkin we did not receive one.

Yes it has happened to me at Disney and countless other hotel stays. I have gotten to the point that I ask when I check in, if is an accessible room and if it is I ask if there is anything else available. Of course if it all that is available, i take it. When I travel for work, for some reason the hotels put us in the accessible rooms. Not sure why...but about 6 out of every 10 stays I have this issue.
