Like in the UK American accents vary ridiculously. People say NEW YORK accent and there are so many variations and most people who attempt them... GET THEM WRONG.

Irish NY accents -- Any cop movie from the 50s
African American NY accents - Denzel and LL Cool J have these down to a science!
Southern accents run from drawls to twangs. Georgia has lots of drawls, especially in South Ga, but Tennessee, they twang it up almost to a song.
Dolly Parton has the most impressive twang, Jimmy Carter, drawl.
