Acai berry

oops didn't realize they were different. This is the GREEN bottle entitled "active". I guess the red bottle is for cholesterol? Or are there more than 2.

I am just a consumer. Being the skeptic I am, I have only purchased one single solitary bottle! Even at $23, it's a little steep for me for fruit juice.... now if it was champagne, I'd probably buy it by the keg!

It's okay! :goodvibes

There are 3 bottles! The original, which is the purple bottle. The active, which has glucosamine in it to help with your joints. And then Pulse, which is the red bottle that has Omega-3 in it to help with your heart.

My parents are just buying the bottles too. They must like it because they are not the people who spend $23/bottle on fruit juice!

I have looked every where in Wal-mart and I can't find acia berry anything. What is the name of the pills?

Also, has anyone noticed any weight loss? On Oprah, Dr. Oz said it will help you lose weight. Getting better sleep and losing weight are 2 things I really need right now.

I take the stuff from the Vitamin Shoppe.. Its like $13 a bottle.. Its not PURE Acai -but the pure stuff tastes TERRIBLE! I only have to take 1-3 oz a day. I sleep better, I have lost a few lbs, and I have more energy... I LOVE IT! I also found the frozed stuff.. I blend it with apple juice, a banana, and ice after a smoothis- SO GOOD!

I have ordered the liquid and the pill form of Acai Berry from Vitacost and I like the pill form much better, it worked better for me :lovestruc!
I'm sold on this stuff. I feel so much better since I've been taking it and have lost about 5 pds (not much, but, that was those hard last 5 pds I had to lose :headache:, but, my husband and a few others have mentioned how 'toned' I look :confused3).
I also don't get sick near as much as I did before (I have a auto-immune disorder).
Not sure about the sleeping part, I have really bad insomnia and take sleeping pill every night (otc) to help w/this :rolleyes1.

I use Melatonin 3 mg for sleep. 50 yo menopausal/night shift worker. LOL

This is from wikipedia:

Açaí Palm as a dietary supplement

It mentions all the benefits the PPs talked about!

I drink cranberry juice without any added sugar often, it's also rich in antioxidants and good for the body. I don't mind its taste at all.

I'll try to find some acai berry juice to try too.:thumbsup2

I have been taking Acai supplement pills for almost 2 months (that's how many were in the bottle) THey ahve 1000 mg of Acai extract per softgel and you are supposed to take 2/day. I got them at Vitamin World. I think they were about $12 for 120 softgels.

I took them for energy and the hopes of weight loss ... I haven't really noticed a difference in either of those. My bottle is almost finished and I don't think I am going to get another.

Hope it can work for some others !

Did you read the full Wiki entry, especially the reference to the Quackwatch study on Acai? Sounds like just another opportunity for PT Barnum to be proven right.

I tried the acai berry drink from GNC. It was the most horrible stuff I ever tasted....

I get this at Sams Club at $5.87, tastes great!!!

I just started using the ACAI powder in my healthy shake.
I have been making/drinking the following healthy shake for over a year now.

In your blender mix:
8oz of any ice cold juice (I use diet oceanspray crangrape)
1 scoop of SOY
1 tsp of ground flaxseed
1 tsp of brewer's yeast
1 tsp of acai powder
1/2 of a banana
6 ice cubes
BLEND

I buy all the supplements at Whole Foods and the juice at my supermarket.
I love it and love the results from the healthy shake re: menopause issues. The ACAI is something I have used for under a month.

Did you come up with this recipe on your own or read it somewhere ? I'm going to give it a try (hoping to naturally address some mp issues too and hope it may help with borderline high bp as well - at my dr's adamant insistence Im taking very mild prescription med for bp :-(.

If it doesn't taste to powdery I will probably like it.

:wave2: 5forDiz,
With the help of my DSister. She is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in a large Boston hospital. I was having mp issues (hot flashes) and she suggested the SOY. Then we discussed how I would take it and then we both decided a "healthy shake". DSis takes it as well as my 80yo DMom, every day!!! :thumbsup2

OceanSpray juices just came out with a "diet" line. So no sugar. Their greatest new flavor is Pomegrante. YUMMY.

Make sure your juice is ice cold. Add the 6 ice cubes. Blend away. You will love it and know that it is all in the name of good health. :thumbsup2

Sounds great, I'll definitely be giving this a try !

I'm not big on taking meds and it seems so many dr's these days are so

quick to prescribe without trying out other alternatives beforehand :sad2:

I'll let you know, thanks again :goodvibes

The Acai Berry has such a high level of bioactivity that from the
time of harvesting, there is only a window of 24 hours for
processing to occur. So within this period, the fruit must be
picked, transported, and processed - quite a challenge really!

I know this thread is old but was wondering how it was working for anyone who's taking any of the different varieties acai berry comes in.

I more interested in the juice, not crazy about taking pills.

I have no info on the juice. I know there have been many scams concerning the pills and weight loss over the past few years. There has been no evidence that shows Acai promotes weigh loss. Companies joined on the bandwagon to try and cash in on the Acai craze.

As far as the health benefits, I'm sure they are there, but it seems like the people I know who take all of these expensive supplements are the same people who are sick all the time! :confused3

Occasionally I'll buy a bag of Acai chocolate covered berries at Costco because my DD loves them. Once I sucked all of the chocolate off a berry and the actual berry was the size of a pea! Needless to say, those bags are more chocolate and not so much berry! :rotfl:

Does anyone else take Acai supplements? Dr. Oz, on Oprah, recommended the Acai berry -- highest form of omega 3 and I think fiber known to man. It comes in pill form and can be found at Wal-Mart.

I have been sleeping like a rock -- and I just discovered that could be one of the (awesome!) side effects. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this!

I have looked every where in Wal-mart and I can't find acia berry anything. What is the name of the pills?

Sorry, folks, but this is NOT TRUE.

In fact, Dr. Oz and Oprah have SUED over 40 companies for making up quotes attributed to them and using their image to sell their products.

Oprah, Dr. Oz Sue Over 'Hurtful' Acai Berry Claims
Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Mehmet Oz Say They Did Not Endorse Berry Products

Oprah's name is on it, it's a near guarantee it will sell.

A book, magazine or diet with her golden seal of approval gives a consumer a sense of trust. After all, if Oprah Winfrey uses it, it has to be good, right?

So last year, when she and Columbia University heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz talked about the acai berry on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," products featuring the now-famous fruit exploded onto the market, into television pitches, Internet popup ads and e-mails clogging your inbox.

Acai berry was marketed as the answer to weight loss, sexual dysfunction, even longer life.

These wild claims may seem more plausible when Winfrey and Oz's names are used as endorsements.

"Companies used the fact that Oprah and Memhet Oz talked about the acai berries on their shows to create the impression that Oprah and Oz were selling these products -- and endorsing them," said David Schardt, from the Center for Science and Public Interest. The Center for Science and the Public Interest says there is no evidence acai actually helps you lose weight.

Now, Winfrey and Oz have filed suit against more than 40 companies, some selling acai, others pushing other products, with their names right on them.

"Defendants are fabricating quotes or falsely purporting to speak in Dr. Oz's and/or Ms. Winfrey's voice about specific brands and products that neither of them has endorsed," the complaint reads.

Oz spoke exclusively to "Good Morning America" against the claims that marketers have allegedly made with his name, calling them "hurtful." "Many Americans have seen images of me, and Oprah and others supporting, it would appear, products that actually don't work in the ways that are described," Oz said. "And more importantly, when consumers trusting us try to buy these products over the Web, what they end up getting are fake products, pills that don't really have what's promised in them. They're often duped into paying more than they should. If my picture is next to a product, endorsing it and supporting your purchase of it, I did not give them permission."

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is also filing suit on behalf of consumers who were allegedly tricked.

"For thousands of dieters, the quest for a miracle product has become a nightmare," Madigan said in a press release. "Far too often, consumers end up losing their money -- not weight -- in these deals."
"Hopefully these companies will think twice about exploiting celebrities and cheating people by making them think that celebrities really endorsed these products," Schardt said.

The FTC is considering new rules insisting that celebrities must actually use any product they endorse. The acai berry was virtually unknown outside the United States until 2001, when two brothers, Ryan and Jeremy Black, began to sell acai through Sambazon Inc., promoting its antioxidant properties.

Harvested as a deep purple pulp from 60-foot palm trees, acai (pronounced "ah-sigh-ee") is exported as a thick pulp and sold in a capsule, powder or juice form at health food stores and online.

Today billion-dollar beverage giants, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Anheuser-Busch, are adding the fruit to their beverage lineups, according to The Wall Street Journal. It's also found in products from Stonyfield Farm and Haagen-Dazs. Procter & Gamble recently infused acai into its Herbal Essence shampoos and conditioners.

Oz, who appears on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" as a medical expert, told ABCNews.com earlier this year that he had never officially endorsed acai.

"Acai is a powerful antioxidant," said Oz. "Colorful, dark foods like red wine, pomegranates, concord grapes, blueberries -- they call them brain berries -- are full of nutrients."

As far as those weight loss properties, Oz said, "I'd be surprised if by itself acai could help."

Acai products are distributed through such stores as Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Jamba Juice, as well as many conventional grocery chains and the Web.

DON'T waste your money, folks.

Acai may be an anti-oxidant, but the only way to lose weight is to EAT LESS and MOVE MORE.

If you eat a lot of berries, moving more will not be a problem :lmao:

I saw a great news story on the acai berry and the area in South America where it comes from. The gist of the story is pretty much what Deb said. There are no magic properties. It has similar benefits to other members of the berry family.
