My ds, 16, is a part of his HS Academic Decathlon team.
This is different than Scholastic Bowl. He attends a regular class dedicated to Academic Decathlon. He also rec's college credit from the Cal. State at Fresno. This weekend he is in Sacramento participating in the State Finals with his team. The team is not just made up of 4.0 students.. in fact, each team has to have kids with 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0 gpa's. It is a three day event. Teenagers have taken over Sacramento. The competition not only has a series of written tests but also an interview and speech presentations. Usually the speeches are on serious topics. Topics such as enviromental issues, healthcare, population control, International policies.... etc. Well, Jake's speech is
"Everything tastes better with Bacon!" LOL......
He did well with the speech in previous competition placing second with his fact filled but comical speech invoking the pleasure of pork that can help bring the world together making it a better place. Jake is a laid back kind of kid. The speech is all Jake...
So do any of you out there have kids participating in Academic Decathlon? I have heard that one of the prep HS in Chicago is the Team to beat! They have an awesome record always finishing at the top in the National Competition.
