I am just returning from our local AC Moore where I found musuem style mats with simple black frames for $3.29 and $4.79 (sale prices). The smaller frame is an 8x10 mat with a 3.5x5 opening and the larger frame is 11x14 mat with a 5x7 opening. They are AC Moore's own brand of frames and they have built in picture hangers for horizontal or vertical hanging on the back . The backings are plastic and not cardboard.
