Absolutely disgraceful (some adult content)

Both countries health care sucks .... someone needs to come up with a real solution to it. But say the UK is free and thus good is wrong. Saying the US is pay per use makes it good is also wrong.

Good point. And 9% is not all that cheap (it would run me about $7200 per year). What I like about the 9% though is that the more you make the more you pay. In the U.S., you pay a LOT (the same) no matter if you make $25,000 per year or $100,000 per year.

As for the waits, that's not so bad, really.

In the good old days (just a few years ago), if I called for a mammogram appointment, I could get in within 2 weeks. In late August, I called to schedule my routine mammogram and I got a November 8th appointment. My OB/GYN is booking 3 months out unless you have an emergency.

Do you have the ability to get a test outside of the public health system? (Meaning you pay for it yourself)

2 pairs of glasses for DS and I cost $1,000.00 in August. QUOTE]

This has no bearing on the original topic, but I just wanted to say that I now use Sears as my eyeglass source. $99 complete gave me no line bifocals. I added $25 for the insurance. Even with my vision insurance (doesn't cover Sears)I couldn't come near that price!!!

Could you call a hospital in another town and give the "itching discharge" story? Call a place where you haven't given your name. I agree with you....you need to be seen immediately if you have any concerns. A good friend of mine was seeing this guy who was a jerk and he was on the road a lot for work and had a girl in every city. He gave her something that was symptomless. When symptoms finally started showing up, it was too late and now she has severe scarring and may be unable to have kids. I felt awful for her. She was only 22 years old.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't accept my doctors telling me I had to wait months to see them. If I call and it's an emergency, I'm seen that day. When I need to make a routine appointment, I never have to wait more than a week. The longest we've waited was an appointment with a urologist for DH for some fertility testing and that was 2 weeks. That goes for all my doctors...my family doctor, my eye doctor, my gynecologist, my fertility doctor, my gastroenterologist, my oral surgeon (yeah, I'm 29 and have more doctors than a 75 year old). If you're being told it's going to take months to have a procedure or see a doctor, you need to find another doctor and another hospital for the procedure. That's completely unacceptable.

I hope it all works out for you. I admire that you're actively taking control of your health and I hope all of your tests come out in your favor. :goodvibes

I don't get it, what is so wrong with this thread? :confused3 I don't know how old your DD is, but I talk frequently to my DD's 11 and 7 about these type of issues!

There's a deeper meaning here. I don't think anyone is *really* offended. Carry on! :teeth:

I would just like to add that our health care here in the UK is not free for those who work!!! I believe We pay 9% of our salary towards the National Health Service.

Susan

I think our systems are fairly similar but I have never had to wait for any tests my Dr will see me the same day to get the test done. I have had to wait for my knee operation but that was because I wanted the best clinic to do it and not just any ortho to open me up to repair my knee.

Fair point of course! I don't really have an answer to that, I guess it took my four years to realise I'm not immortal!

The thing that I think is worse in all of this is the fact that the most prevelant STDs don't have any symptoms, yet a doctor will only see you if you have symptoms! That's just ridiculous.

Also, in the UK everywhere, the government and the press are encouraging people to get checked out of STDs....yet its near impossible to get an appointment, a lady at my doctor surgery told me 'we just don't have the funding!!'
I do not find Dec to bad. keep in mind it is almost November, and if you have nothing going on- is it "really" that bad of a wait? I really do not think so.but if you wait, it will be longer. just make the appt.

Well I did make an appointment....

Please read my other post to find out what a mess I'm in now....

I'm devastated and got out of bed to post what's happened on here....but no one has replied :guilty:

my other thread was deemed inappropriate so it wasn't on the board.

Basically I got the appointment I wanted and it made my boyfriend angry...I have absolutely no idea why!

And I've just been for those tests...it was THOROUGHLY UNPLEASANT!!!!! :confused3

If you don't mind--what did they do that was unpleasant. I have been tested for all manner of STDs not too long ago and I didn't find the tests to be anymore unpleasant than a Pap smear. But maybe I missed something? Keeping it all appropriate if you can, what did they do to you?

Well in the UK you don't have to have a pap smear until you are 25, and I'm only 21. So to have someone 'digging around' was a a whole new thing for me! The nurse was fantastic though, I'm even thinking of taking her a gift to say thank you (is that weird????)

On a side note, I think it is very wrong, considering the age of consent is 16, in the UK, that pap smears aren't required until 25!

That is awful. I guess that's a money saving effort?

Um, Pap smears aren't required here either. :confused3

Well, they may not be "required" here but I can tell you that I've had one every year since I was about 17 years old. They won't even give you oral contraceptives unless you get the full exam--at least no physician I've ever been to would.

Well obviously in the UK bad things don't happen to people under 25..... (that is my good ol' british sarcasm)
