Is there anyway to check availibility? It seems it would take forever to contact each owner to see if their unit/house is avail for the week that I am interested in. Thanks!

Most owners have a little calendar link after the description of their property.

I think that you and I may be in the same boat. I have 3 nights at the end of our vacation with no accomodations booked yet.
I want a nice pool and a kitchen as well.
I have been looking at VRBO.com and cyberrentals.com but have only contacted one owner (by email) They did respond right away though. Someone else mentioned about the calander, which I use, in fact I pass over most ads that don't have an availability calender, which may be my loss.

I think it was you that mentioned www.bookit.com in a post. I was thinking of using that for a home at Regal Palms. The lazy river looks nice and I would rent a pool home 3 bedrooms (for $159 a nite) so we could have quiet time as well.

I just called bookit to inquire about pool heat (for the pool homes). I couldn't find that addressed on the web site. There is an additional charge for pool heat of $20-25 dollars a day. I also asked if there were any other charges associated with the rental and he said no, just pool heat.
The thing is, I would have to pay before I find out as the info is given at that time. Why can't places just be up front about things? ugh.

You do have to email each owner if they don't have the calendar.. but you can set the form to keep your information so that you don't have to retype it every time.

I also used www.rentalo.com - you can email a bunch of owners at once (set up a junk mail address for this!)

We have had great experiences with vrbo!
For those that dont have a calendar, like someone else said, you can email, adn it will save your info so you dont have to enter it each and every time!
All of the home owners we have contacted, have responded right away!

My tip on renting from an owner, find out if they live nearby or if they hire a managing company, to manage their houses!
I suppose a mng company is ok, but the personal touch we get from an owner who lives around there is unbeatable! That is definitely what has made so many of our trips unforgettable!
