I thought I read somewhere (and of course now can't find it) are any of the pools on board Salt Free???
Also, how early do you have to get on deck to get a chair close to the pool area?

There are always plenty of places to sit by the pools, but if you want really close to them, the kiddie pool, and family pool are busy from the moment they open in the morning. So if you want up close I'd be there when they open. With the adult pool we have seen empty chairs, by the pool all the time. Not as many people go there as the family pool.
Also if you have late dining, the pools will be more empty while people are at early dining. Or if you have early dining, and don't care about the show, go right after dinner, as most other people are either at dinner, or have gone to the show. Most kids are in the kids clubs in the evenings. You can actually have an entire pool or hot tub all to yourself if you go in the evening.
And if you want to see the show too, it does repeat on your TV in your room for 24 hours. Or go to the show and then go to the pools while people are at the clubs. It is great to have the entire place to yourself. We have done this a few times.

All of the pools are fresh water.

As to pool chairs, DCL requests that chairs not be saved. I'm a rat (ok, I admit it). If I'm standing and watch that a chair is wearing a towel for 30 minutes or more without a body occupying it, I'll go over and move the towel off.

Yes, there are rude people who go up and "claim" chairs in the morning. DCL asks that this not be done, but really doesn't enforce it. 30 minutes is plenty of time to get a drink, make a potty stop, or check on a child in programming. I've only done this once, but.....

If you are by the Mickey pool, these chairs change over rapidly. The ones really close to the pool are hard to get, but most parents of little kids will be in or by the pool with the kid. The ones by the Goofy pool tend to be used for extended sunbathing or "claiming."

We have never had a problem getting a chair by the Mickey pool. We use one per family to put our things on & have the kids sit & eat there when they take a break. If we start out in the farthest row, we can usually move up to the front as people leave.

Actually we usually use chairs up on deck 10 overlooking Micky pool because our kids were 5 and 8 and used the slide a lot. There were almost always chairs up there.... the only downside was the ciggie smoke...... yuk!

We realize that when the kids are in the pool (5 and 2), one of us will be also. Because of this, we only use one chair. There is no sense in taking two chairs when we know only one will be occupied at any point in time. We started doing this when we realized how crunched it is for chairs at the pool in the hopes we might make one available for someone else. Just an idea you may want to consider.
