? about carryon luggage

How do you measure the carryon luggage? Do you measure from floor to top, counting the wheels? Or is it just the suitcase itself? thansk!

Yes..poptarts are a solid not a liquid over 3oz.

Pretty sure it has to be under forty inches total...such as 20 x 9 x 11. If you add the dimensions they have to be 40 or under.

We just flew to Myrtle beach on June 8th and home on June 13th. No one even looked at our carry on size let alone measured. I was really careful with ours making sure they were not over the limit with no bulges etc. My MIL's was over the limit by about 5 inches total. She carried it on with no problem. When I mentioned it before we left she just laughed and said they won't measure it.

MIL flies around 4 trips per year on various airlines and she says no one has ever measured her luggage. They only weigh the checked luggage.

It seemed strange to me because everything I read online says they measure. Has anyone had theirs measured?

It depends on the airline. Spirit has a larger carryon allowance than Northwest for example.

I have another question. (this is my first year flying, so pardon my questions) We are going for a very short trip to Disney this fall. I had thought about stopping at he Earl of Sandwich on our way to the airport andpicking up some sandwiches to go. How far can we take them into the airport? All the way and then eat them right before we board?

You can bring your sandwiches to the airport, through security and even onto the plane. Drinks are another thing, you're better off buying them after security, otherwise you'll need to finish them before you enter the security screening area.

Several threads about Airtran measuring bags. The airline employees can generally tell if a bag is oversized just by looking.

You might have an issue if your carry on bag is too large and only fits in the bin lengthwise.

I have personally seen Air Tran measuring carry ons, as well as checked bags. This was in Dallas and also in Ft Lauderdale. All three times the rep had eyeballed it right and the bags were oversized. The carry ons had to be checked and the checked bags got an oversize fee added. Each time the people tried to argue with the rep to no avail. Also flying from Atlanta to Dallas on Air Tran last January there was a man who got past security with an oversized carry on. However, once on the plane the bag would not fit despite the man moving everyone else's stuff around in the bin and trying to force the bag in. The FA saw him and told him the bag would not fit and would have to be checked. He argued with her saying he knew Air Trans measurement for carry ons (51") and his bag exactly fit those dimensions so he knew it would fit. He just kept trying to force it with the FA argueing that no way was it going to fit. It was just too big. She finally insisted he give her the bag. She told him he would not be charged for it, but it had to go under the plane. He still argued but did finally give it to her.

The airline gate attendants are really good about eyeballing carryon bags. They pretty much know what is going to fit and what isn't. The issue will be if there isn't enough bin space for all the bags that are brough on board. If you have an oversized bag, and have to put it in sideways, rather than the correct way, you may have to gate check it. It's not fair to have a bag that doesn't meet the dimensions and then take up two spots...taking a spot away from someone who has the correct size bag.

Everyone keeps mentioning air tran. On this occasion we were flying spirit. I know my MIL carryon was to large. I measured it per spirits guidelines. No one at the gate even glanced at it. It did fit in the overhead bin.

I agree that it wouldn't be fair to take up two spots. I was just kind of surprised that no one measured her bag. It was obvious to me that it was to large, since I had planned ahead and spent a lot of time measuring my families luggage to make sure we were not going over the size limit. Then she acted like I was crazy for worrying about it.

This was my first time flying in almost 4 years. My MIL flies much more often (several times per year.) She carries on the same oversized luggage everytime and has never been stopped. Her last flight was northwest and their maximum size is much smaller than spirit. It had to be almost 15 inches too big for that flight!

I was just curious what everyone else had experienced. I felt like all my planning and measuring was for nothing. We had even bought one new carryon for my son since his was too large with the wheels.
