I'm seeing quite a few posts that seem to insinuate that National (or whoever) will charge you a fee for not cancelling a ressie if they have your credit card on file. Has this actually HAPPENED to anyone or is it a rumor that it might happen?

It's in the details when you make a reservation. I know people that this has happened to.

we missed cancelling a reservation with emerald ailse once, when we got home we called to apologize

we asked if we would be charged for the reservation

the reservationist we talked to at the time said the reservation just fell off the system after 12 midnight and that we would not be charged....sure enough there was NO charge to the credit card we had on file...

thus, even though policy says you will be charged, we were not

your mileage may vary, but sometimes "policies" set by rental companies are not followed to the "letter"

we do rent a lot with national so that might make a difference too ( not sure did not ask that question )

No-show

National Car Rental may charge a fee for vehicles that are reserved but not rented, if the reservation is not canceled 24 hours prior to anticipated arrival.
No-show fees will be billed to the credit card given at the time of reservation.

The word I picked up on was "may", not "will".

It is just common courtesy to cancel what you will not be using.
